Understanding Insurance Write-Off Categories

When an insurance company declares a vehicle a "total loss", it is assigned one of these official categories:

Category S (Structural)

Safety Critical

The vehicle has sustained damage to its structural framework — such as chassis rails, side members, or roof pillars. It can be repaired and returned to the road, but repair quality must be professionally verified.

Category N (Non-Structural)

Repairable

The vehicle sustained non-structural damage — such as cosmetic bumper damage, wiring harness issues, or suspension wear — where repair costs exceeded vehicle market value.

Category C (Pre-2017 Structural)

Legacy Category

Old structural damage category used prior to October 2017. Similar to Category S, repair costs exceeded pre-accident market value.

Category D (Pre-2017 Non-Structural)

Legacy Category

Old non-structural category used prior to October 2017. Similar to Category N, the vehicle was repairable but insurer opted to pay out.
