Daewoo Lanos
The Daewoo Lanos arrived in the United Kingdom in 1997 as the first clean-sheet, in-house developed model representing Daewoo's second-generation portfolio. Designed to replace the outdated Nexia (an Astra Mk2 derivative), the Lanos (codenamed T100) showcased curvier styling penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign. Crucially, the engineering development involved considerable British expertise, spearheaded by Daewoo's Worthing Technical Centre in West Sussex in partnership with Porsche for chassis, suspension, and braking dynamics, and GM for powertrain components. Available as a three-door hatchback, five-door hatchback, or four-door saloon, the Lanos was offered with 1.4-litre 8v (74bhp) and 1.6-litre 16v (105bhp) E-TEC petrol engines in S, SE, and SX trims. The car offered dependable family transport backed by Daewoo's generous Peace of Mind ownership scheme, taking a respectable share of the value segment before being succeeded by the Kalos in late 2002. Today, surviving Lanos examples are rare survivors in the sub-£1,000 used car market, requiring close appraisal for subframe rust, crankshaft position sensor faults, and rear drum brake cylinder seizures.

Common Faults & Reliability
These are the most common documented problems for the Daewoo Lanos, sorted by their typical impact and frequency.
Subframe Mounting Point and Floorpan Seam Corrosion
high severityExposed underside sheet metal around the front subframe anchor bolts, rear trailing arm attachment brackets, and floorpan seams suffers from advanced rust perforation under UK winter road salt exposure. The thin factory primer and sealant crack over time, allowing moisture to wick between welded body seams. Corrosion progresses unseen until structural rigidity is severely compromised, resulting in immediate MOT test failure and requiring substantial fabricated steel repair plates.
Rear Drum Brake Wheel Cylinder Seizure
medium severityThe hydraulic wheel cylinders inside the rear drum brake assemblies are prone to internal corrosion and fluid weeping past rubber piston seals. Over time, road salt and brake dust cause the internal pistons to seize inside their cast iron bores. This causes the rear brake shoes to drag continuously against the drums, overheating the rear hubs, accelerating shoe friction lining wear, creating uneven handbrake holding, and failing MOT brake roller tests.
Crankshaft Position Sensor Thermal Breakdown
medium severityThe magnetic crankshaft position sensor mounted low on the engine block adjacent to the front crankshaft pulley is exposed to extreme thermal cycling from the exhaust system. As the internal fine copper windings degrade, thermal expansion breaks electrical continuity when the engine bay reaches full operating temperature. This causes sudden engine cutting out while driving, extended starter motor cranking on warm restart, and check engine lamp illumination.
