Datsun Bluebird (610/710/910)

Production Years: 1971 - 19834 Documented Faults

The Datsun Bluebird was the backbone of Datsun UK's 1970s volume push, sold as the 160B, 180B and 200B across the 610, 710/810 and 910 series from 1971 until the Datsun name was dropped in favour of Nissan in late 1983. Rear-wheel drive throughout, with L-series overhead-cam four-cylinder engines and a reputation for bulletproof mechanicals, it won fleet and private buyers with spacious accommodation, generous equipment and strong resale value - at one point helping make Datsun the UK's leading car importer. The flip side was thin, poorly protected steel: vinyl-roofed examples often rotted beneath the roof and around the turrets, while sills, rear wings and floor pans succumbed to salt. Top-end rattles from tired timing chains and camshafts, and vague recirculating-ball steering, are the main mechanical caveats. A solid Bluebird is an honest, inexpensive classic family car; a rotten one is a welding bill looking for a buyer.

Common Faults & Reliability

These are the most common documented problems for the Datsun Bluebird (610/710/910), sorted by their typical impact and frequency.

Structural corrosion (vinyl roof, rear quarters, sills)

high severity

Bluebirds of the 160B/180B/200B era were built with thin steel and modest corrosion protection, and UK cars spent decades on salted roads. The most expensive rot hides beneath vinyl roof coverings and around the front and rear turret edges, while sills, rear quarters and floor pans rot from the inside out. Once rust reaches the roof pillars or floor structure the car is often economically irreparable, so a hoist-level inspection is essential.

Est. repair cost:£800-£2,500

Timing-chain, camshaft and valve-train rattle

medium severity

The L-series overhead-cam four-cylinders are durable but timing chains, camshafts and valve trains wear with high mileage. A rattle from the front or top of the engine at cold start that persists after warm-up indicates a stretched chain or worn camshaft and valve-train components; left unattended it affects ignition timing, performance and can become an expensive rebuild.

Est. repair cost:£250-£800

Recirculating-ball steering box and idler-arm play

medium severity

The 160B, 180B and 200B Bluebirds use a recirculating-ball steering box with an idler arm on the far side of the car. After 40-plus years the box worm and sector, idler-arm bushings and rod ends all wear, producing a dead spot straight ahead, wandering on motorways and a knock over potholes and speed cushions. MOT data for surviving UK Bluebirds shows steering is the second-largest fault category at 17% of faults, with idler bushes and steering dust covers among the most common advisories. Tightening the box adjuster only masks wear; worn idler bushes need replacement and a tired box needs reconditioning or replacement.

Est. repair cost:£150–£500
