Isuzu D-Max (Mk3)
The third-generation Isuzu D-Max (2021-onwards) represents a massive leap forward for the brand, transforming from a pure agricultural workhorse into a highly refined, tech-laden pickup capable of challenging the Ford Ranger. It boasts a completely redesigned cabin, significantly improved ride quality, and a maximum five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, a rarity in the pickup class. In the UK, it retains its legendary 3.5-tonne towing capacity and 1-tonne payload, making it a favorite among farmers and tradespeople, while the luxurious V-Cross models appeal to lifestyle buyers. Reliability remains its trump card, powered by a heavily revised, unburstable 1.9-litre diesel engine. It is the perfect choice for buyers needing a tough, dependable commercial vehicle that doesn't sacrifice modern comforts.
Isuzu D-Max (Mk2)
The Mk2 Isuzu D-Max (2012-2020) is renowned in the UK as one of the toughest, most pragmatic pickup trucks on the market. Unlike softer "lifestyle" rivals, the D-Max unapologetically focuses on durability, offering a massive 3.5-tonne towing capacity and a highly capable four-wheel-drive system. Early models featured a punchy 2.5-litre twin-turbo diesel, which was replaced in 2017 by a more efficient, though less torquey, 1.9-litre unit to meet emissions standards without requiring AdBlue. Reliability is genuinely exceptional; it is the default choice for farmers, builders, and off-road enthusiasts who value mechanical dependability over interior luxury. It is less suited to family duties due to its bouncy unladen ride and utilitarian cabin.
Isuzu D-Max / Rodeo (Mk1)
The first-generation Isuzu D-Max (often badged as the Rodeo in its early years) established Isuzu's reputation in the UK as a manufacturer of seriously tough, unpretentious pickup trucks. Launched to compete with the Mitsubishi L200 and Nissan Navara, it prioritized utilitarian ruggedness and a massive towing capacity over passenger comfort. The 2.5-litre and 3.0-litre diesel engines are incredibly robust, if agricultural, making it a favorite among the farming and construction industries. Reliability is legendary, provided the chassis is protected from rust. It is an excellent, cheap workhorse for those who need a dependable tool rather than a lifestyle vehicle.
Isuzu Trooper
The Isuzu Trooper is a legendary, old-school 4x4 that offered massive space and serious off-road capability, competing directly with the Mitsubishi Shogun and Land Rover Discovery. In the UK, it was highly favored by the farming and equestrian communities for its immense towing ability and rugged ladder-frame chassis. While the exterior styling is distinctly utilitarian and the ride is agricultural, it provided a dependable workhorse platform. Reliability of the later 3.0-litre diesel engine (4JX1) was notoriously problematic due to complex injector issues, making the older 3.1-litre diesel the preferred choice for longevity. Surviving examples are now rare and strictly for dedicated off-roaders or those needing a cheap, heavy-duty tow vehicle.
