The 1995 Reliant Rialto has 3 known issues. 3 are moderate concerns worth inspecting before purchase.

Front Suspension Swing-Arm and Steering Bush Wear

Moderate

The single front wheel on the Rialto is mounted on an unsprung leading/trailing swing-arm arrangement carrying the full weight of braking and cornering. Road potholes and speed cushions accelerate wear on the front pivot needle roller bearings and steering headstock bushes. Neglected grease lubrication leads to excessive slack, causing vagueness in the steering, front tyre scuffing, and severe MOT failure.

Symptoms: Excessive play in steering wheel before the front wheel responds, Wandering or darting across white lines and road camber transitions...

Est. repair cost: £160–£380

HT-E High-Compression Cylinder Head Warpage

Moderate

In 1984, the Rialto 2 adopted the HT-E (High Torque Economy) engine featuring a modified cylinder head running a high 10.5:1 compression ratio and distinct yellow rocker cover. The high compression puts increased thermal stress on the thin alloy cylinder head. If the cooling system develops limescale buildup or the electric fan fails, the head quickly overheats and warps, blowing the head gasket between cylinders two and three.

Symptoms: Loss of power and rough running across mid-range RPM under hill climbing, Pinking or pre-ignition under acceleration on modern standard unleaded petrol...

Est. repair cost: £280–£650

Rear Leaf Spring Shackle and Mounting Plate Corrosion

Moderate

Although the Rialto's main chassis rails were galvanised from the factory, the rear suspension mounting plates, spring shackle pins, and steel U-bolts were not galvanised to the same thickness. Electrolytic reaction between dissimilar metals and road salt causes heavy corrosion around the rear spring eyes. Worn rubber bushes allow the spring leaves to twist, causing axle tramp under acceleration and unpredictable rear-end breakaway.

Symptoms: Squeaking or groaning from the rear suspension over speed humps, Rear body stance sagging lower on one side due to tired leaf springs...

Est. repair cost: £180–£450

Buying Tips for the 1995 Reliant Rialto

  • Inspect the single front wheel swing-arm and pivot needle roller bearings for play, as potholes quickly wear out neglected front-end bushes.
  • Check that the HT-E engine on Rialto 2 models has not been run on low-octane fuel without adjusted ignition timing, as pinking can damage high-compression pistons.
  • Examine the rear leaf spring hanger plates, U-bolts, and shackle pins for corrosion, which can seize or fracture despite the galvanised main chassis.
  • Verify smooth gear engagement in the 4-speed manual gearbox, checking for worn second-gear synchromesh or a binding clutch cable.
