The 1967 Sunbeam Rapier has 4 known issues. 1 of these are classified as serious faults that could be expensive to repair. 2 are moderate concerns worth inspecting before purchase.

Structural sill, jacking point and rear spring hanger rot

Serious

Both the Audax Series cars (1955–1967) and the Arrow fastback coupes (1967–1976) suffer from severe structural corrosion in British climates. Road grime and water thrown up by the road collect inside the multi-box outer and inner sills, the jacking points, and the rear leaf-spring mounting brackets. On fastback models, water also collects behind the front wings where they join the A-pillars. Because structural replacement panels are no longer manufactured off the shelf, restoring a rotted Rapier requires extensive bespoke steel cutting and welding that can easily outstrip the value of the vehicle.

Symptoms: Bubbling paintwork and soft patches along the bottom of the front wings and outer sills, Visible rust holes and crumbling metal around the rear leaf-spring chassis mounting boxes...

Est. repair cost: £1,200–£4,800

Alloy cylinder head corrosion and head gasket failure on 1725cc engines

Moderate

Later Series V Rapiers and all fastback variants use the Rootes 1725cc engine fitted with an aluminium alloy cylinder head. If previous owners neglected biannual coolant flushes with anti-corrosion inhibitor, galvanic corrosion eats into the waterways around the cylinder combustion chambers. This degradation leads to blown head gaskets, cooling jacket pressurisation, and coolant contaminating the sump oil. Holbay-tuned H120 engines run higher compression ratios (9.6:1) and twin Weber carburettors, placing even greater thermal stress on the alloy head casting and gasket fire rings.

Symptoms: White froth or emulsified sludge under the oil filler cap and along the rocker cover, Engine temperature gauge climbing toward hot when cruising or standing in traffic...

Est. repair cost: £400–£1,100

Laycock de Normanville overdrive failure and solenoid sticking

Moderate

The Laycock de Normanville overdrive was fitted as standard on early Series Rapiers and optional on later cars, providing relaxed high-speed cruising. Common faults include sticking electrical actuation solenoids, failed column or dashboard switches, dirty hydraulic oil restricting internal pressure, and worn friction cones. When the hydraulic pressure drops below operating threshold, the overdrive either refuses to engage, slips under acceleration, or worse, fails to disengage when reversing, which can cause catastrophic mechanical damage to the overdrive planet gears.

Symptoms: Overdrive fails to engage when switching the lever or dashboard toggle switch on, Engine revs flare during overdrive engagement, accompanied by a slipping clutch sensation...

Est. repair cost: £280–£750

Pillarless door glass seal leakage and bespoke trim scarcity

Minor

Both Audax and Arrow Rapiers feature distinctive pillarless side window glass where the front door glass meets the rear quarter window without a central B-pillar. Over time, the specialized extruded rubber weatherstrips harden, shrink, and perish. This permits wind noise at cruising speeds and allows rainwater to run down inside the doors and rear quarter cavities, accelerating concealed rust. Sourcing replacement rubber mouldings, die-cast chrome handles, and model-specific two-tone brightwork is notoriously difficult, as these parts were not shared with mainstream Hillman saloons.

Symptoms: Loud wind roar and air whistling from the side windows at road speeds above 45 mph, Water dripping onto front seat cushions or collecting on the carpets during heavy rain...

Est. repair cost: £180–£500

Buying Tips for the 1967 Sunbeam Rapier

  • Inspect the bottom corners of the large curved rear window for bubbling rust under the seal
  • Check H120 authenticity against club records before paying a performance premium
