The 2002 Volvo C70 (Gen 1) has 4 known issues. 2 of these are classified as serious faults that could be expensive to repair. 2 are moderate concerns worth inspecting before purchase.

Corrosion at arches, sills and subframes despite better protection

Serious

Hagerty’s C70 at 30 buying advice says rust is rare compared with its 850-era rivals but is emphatic that wheel arches, sills and subframes must be checked, especially on early cars. The Volvo Owners' Club rust guide details the general Volvo failure pattern - blocked sill drains rotting the section from inside out and box-section corners lifting paint. On a 25-plus-year-old convertible, a straight car is the exception that earns its premium.

Symptoms: Bubbling at the arch seams or rear bumper frame mountings, Paint flaking at the sill edges under the doors...

Est. repair cost: £400-£2,500

Cambelt or timing belt failure on the five-cylinder engine

Serious

The first-generation C70 shares the 850/P80 transverse five-cylinder petrol engines, which are interference designs: a snapped or jumped cambelt stops the engine and typically bends valves and damages pistons. Volvo specified cambelt and tensioner renewal at around 60,000-80,000 miles or five years, and Volvo Owners Club threads describe C70 owners renewing belts late, with tensioner and idler bearing wear the usual warning signs. Belt wear is hidden behind the timing covers, so a missing belt history is the main risk when buying a used C70.

Symptoms: Squealing or rattling from the front of the engine, Engine turns over but will not start...

Est. repair cost: £250-£500

Blocked roof drain plugs flooding the boot

Moderate

On the first-generation C70 Convertible the roof recess has drain plugs either side that back up with leaves and grime, letting water run into the boot and rear parcel shelf - the Volvo Owners' Club has a solved thread describing exactly this: unblocking with a bottle-and-hose drain unblocker after discovering standing water, with the previous owner having simply sealed the drains shut instead. Hagerty’s C70 guide likewise warns the roof electrics (motors, regulators) deserve scrutiny. Blocked drains plus damp boot liners equal corroded connectors and mouldy trim.

Symptoms: Damp carpet or tide marks in the boot behind the trim, Musty smell or mould on the rear parcel shelf...

Est. repair cost: £100-£600

Ignition distributor and amplifier faults causing misfire and hard starting

Moderate

The first-generation C70's five-cylinder petrol engines use distributor-based ignition with an electronic amplifier on early cars, moving to individual coils later. Volvo Owners Club threads show C70 owners chasing random misfires, rough idle and no-starts through cap, rotor, leads and finally the coil, with distributor shaft wear and amplifier (power stage) failure the usual root causes. A methodical check with a spark tester sorts most cases for £150-£400.

Symptoms: Random misfire and juddering at low rpm under load, Hard starting or hot-start failures after soaking...

Est. repair cost: £120-£450

Buying Tips for the 2002 Volvo C70 (Gen 1)

  • Operate the convertible top through two full cycles before buying - motors, microswitches and the hydraulic rear arch frame are the expensive bits, and a hesitant cycle means money.
  • Check the boot floor behind the trim for damp and corrosion; the C70 roof drains empty into the boot area and blockages are a known club issue.
  • Scrutinise the wheel arches, sills and the subframe mount areas, which Hagerty flags as the C70 rot spots even if the cars are better than the 850.
  • On a T5, demand proof of regular oil changes and recent cambelt/water pump work; the turbo is happy only if oiling is.
  • Test every electric function - windows, mirrors, seat - because regulators and switchgear failures are common on 25-year-old examples.
