Volvo V70 (Gen 3)
The third-generation V70 of 2007 moved the estate onto the P3 platform under the second-gen S80's skin, kept the load-lugger throne in UK fleets until the V60 gradually took over around 2013-14, and gained the 2013 update with the wider grille, reshaped LED tail lamps and revised bumpers that Parkers and Auto Express documented. Engines spanned D2 1.6D, D3/D4/D5 diesels and 1.6T/2.0T/T5/T6 petrols, many with AWD and the rear Nivomat self-levelling suspension. Auto Express’s own verdict is fair: several recalls over its life but no epidemic of major reliability faults. It remains one of the great practical used buys of the era - as long as you understand its diesel recalls, sunroof drains and the load-carrying rear suspension.

Common Faults & Reliability
These are the most common documented problems for the Volvo V70 (Gen 3), sorted by their typical impact and frequency.
D5 fuel dilution recalls - rising oil, held idle, engine run-on
high severityDVSA’s V70 recall lists for 2008-2010 cars record that the engine oil level may rise and that the engine speed can be maintained or increased after the throttle is released, with the engine in extreme cases continuing to run after switch-off - the five-cylinder diesel dilution story repeated across the P2/P3 Volvos. Auto Express notes the V70 was recalled on a number of occasions over its life. On the buyer side: check the dipstick before the drive, confirm the recall remedies are discharged, and avoid school-run-only histories.
Wiper arm chafing the brake booster vacuum line (2012-13 recall)
high severityA peculiar but genuine Volvo fault that DVSA recorded for these model years: the wiper arm mechanism can chafe against the brake booster vacuum line, gradually reducing brake assistance or - worst case - losing it suddenly, with the fix being rerouting/adding protection to the pipe. It illustrates the V70's wider recall story that Auto Express summarises (multiple recalls, otherwise solid reliability). Check the recall status of the exact car and inspect the pipe at the scuttle for wear marks.
Sunroof drain elbows flooding footwells
medium severityThe Owners' Club has V70 threads of post-rain sloshing and rear footwells that fill like a well, and FnF’s Volvo drain guide explains the mechanical cause across the S80/V70/XC70 generation: front drains run through a 90-degree elbow behind the front wheels that clogs or whose tube slips off, and the rear drains discharge into the trunk area. Water in the sill soaks connectors and amplifiers, so the true cost of a blocked drain is measured in electrics, not carpet. Test all four drains before signing.
