S tronic (DSG) Mechatronic Failure
SeriousGearbox & TransmissionThe mechatronic control unit can fail electronically or hydraulically, causing jerky shifts, loss of gears, or complete transmission failure.
The 2008 facelift brought updated styling, LED DRLs, and common-rail diesel engines. Later cars are generally more reliable, but the dual-mass flywheel on diesel models becomes a concern at higher mileage.
The mechatronic control unit can fail electronically or hydraulically, causing jerky shifts, loss of gears, or complete transmission failure.
Early 2.0 TDI engines (BMM, BKD codes) use a timing belt that can fail if intervals are missed, destroying the engine. Later 1.6 TDI and some 2.0 TDI models switched to chains that stretch and rattle.
The plastic impeller on the water pump can strip or crack, causing coolant circulation loss and overheating even though the pump appears to spin.
Coil packs degrade over time causing misfires, rough running and engine management lights. Affects all petrol models and is a common MOT failure cause.
The dual-mass flywheel on diesel models wears prematurely, causing vibration, judder on clutch engagement and eventually a rattle at idle.
