Rear Seat Belt Retractor Damage (Safety Recall 69D8 / 25V899)

SeriousInterior & Trim

Early production 2025 model-year Audi A5 saloon and Avant models were subject to a safety recall concerning the rear seat belt assemblies. A manufacturing flaw damaged the internal automatic locking retractor (ALR) mechanism in the rear seat belts. MotorSafety reported that Volkswagen recalled 27,768 vehicles because the damaged ALR mechanism can fail to lock when the belt is fully extended, preventing child safety seats from being firmly secured. The defect was officially documented in NHTSA Safety Recall Report 25V-899 under Audi code 69D8. If unaddressed, the belt can become loose during sudden deceleration, elevating injury risk for children.

Est. Repair Cost: £0 (free dealer inspection and replacement of rear seat belt assemblies under recall)
Warning Signs:

Outer rear seat belt fails to lock into automatic ratchet mode when pulled to maximum extension, Child safety seat secured via the seat belt remains loose or develops slack during cornering, Sluggish or binding seat belt webbing retraction into the rear C-pillar trim

What to Inspect:
  • Pull both outer rear seat belts completely out to confirm the automatic locking retractor engages with an audible clicking action
  • Check dealer service records or enter the VIN into the DVSA safety recall checker to verify recall 69D8 completion
  • Inspect rear seat belt webbing and buckle latches for signs of fraying or mechanical sticking

S tronic Hesitation and MHEV+ Low-Speed Step-Off Lag

ModerateGearbox & Transmission

The B10 A5 pairs its 2.0 TFSI and 2.0 TDI engines with a 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission and Audi 48V MHEV plus powertrain generator mounted to the gearbox output shaft. While engineered to provide an 18kW electric boost and smooth stop-start, the electronic throttle-to-clutch calibration can feel hesitant and unhurried when accelerating from a rolling stop into busy UK roundabouts. Parkers observed that the transmission occasionally requires a manual paddle override to find low-end response, while Auto Express noted the petrol powertrain is less punchy off the line than expected. Transmission control module software updates help reduce the hesitation.

Est. Repair Cost: £0 (dealer transmission control module TCM software update under warranty); £200–£350 for diagnostic adaptations
Warning Signs:

Noticeable hesitation or dead-travel in the accelerator pedal when pulling out into traffic gaps at junctions, Abrupt lurch forward when the dual-clutch transmission suddenly engages after a momentary delay, Reluctance to downshift cleanly without clicking the steering wheel shift paddles or selecting Dynamic mode

What to Inspect:
  • Test-drive through several stop-and-go roundabouts and simulate quick rolling pull-aways
  • Check whether the transmission engages reverse and drive promptly without shudder or delays
  • Verify whether the latest engine management (ECU) and transmission (TCM) software campaigns are applied

Jittery Secondary Ride and Road Harshness on S Line Sports Suspension

ModerateSuspension & Chassis

While the B10 A5 is a quiet long-distance cruiser, S Line and Edition 1 models equipped with lowered sports suspension and 19-inch or 20-inch alloy wheels struggle to absorb scarred UK tarmac. RAC Drive reported that on rough British roads the S Line test car dealt with larger bumps well but felt jittery and unsettled over low-quality tarmac and small potholes. The Car Expert aggregated ratings similarly highlight a noticeably firm edge compared to older A4 models. Transverse road scars, drain grates and frost-damaged asphalt send sharp vertical vibrations through the cabin, producing tyre roar and cabin resonance on low-profile rubber.

Est. Repair Cost: £0 (chassis characteristic) to £450–£850 for replacement 19/20-inch tyres or suspension damper bush replacement
Warning Signs:

Constant fidgeting and jittery vertical movement over patched suburban tarmac at 30–50mph, Sharp thuds transmitted through the steering rack and driver seat over sunken utility covers, Elevated road roar on coarse motorway chip-and-seal surfaces on 19-inch and 20-inch tyres

What to Inspect:
  • Drive the car over imperfect urban streets and listen for hollow thuds or dash creaks over bumps
  • Check tyre sidewalls and alloy wheel rims for pothole impact bulging or kerb damage
  • Compare ride quality against an entry-level Sport model on 18-inch wheels and standard comfort suspension

Touchscreen-First Controls With No Physical Buttons - and the Fix Won't Retrofit

MinorInterior & Trim

RAC's verdict on the new A5 is blunt: 'cabin quality and controls a step backwards' - bar a single volume/track-skipping knob and a couple of console buttons, physical controls are 'notable by their absence' and the steering-wheel touch pads are a struggle. Audi's own response is documented by Auto Express: a redesigned interface with a new steering wheel featuring physical controllers, launched on 2026 model-year cars available from December 2025, and explicitly not retrofittable. Used buyers of 2024/25 cars therefore inherit the interface in its least-favoured form, which is worth factoring into resale as much as into the daily drive.

Warning Signs:

Every climate and media adjustment is menu-driven, Accidental track/volume changes from hands resting on the wheel pads, Owner frustration leading to dealer visits asking for physical controls

What to Inspect:
  • Live-drive test the cabin: adjust temperature, fan and volume while driving and judge the distraction cost for you
  • Ask whether the car has the 2026-spec steering wheel with physical controllers or the original touch design
  • Compare with a 2026MY example at the dealer before committing to an early car

Cabin Material and Layout Regression Against the A4 Generation

MinorInterior & Trim

The A5 replaced the A4 but, on RAC's scorecard, brings 'cabin quality and controls a step backwards' in the same car that is otherwise refined and well built, and The Car Expert's aggregate quotes reviewer 'reservations with the styling and layout of the interior' (Carwow) plus lowlights that rivals are more comfortable and practical with tighter rear headroom than tall passengers want. It is not a fault that strands you - it is the soft-cost story of a price-raised, PPC-driven generation: hard plastics in places the outgoing A4 padded, and a spec sheet where equipment that used to be standard is now options.

Est. Repair Cost: £0 - build is sound; trim rattle diagnosis £150-£300 if panels are loose
Warning Signs:

Hard or hollow-feeling lower dash and door-card materials, Minor panel trim rattles over broken roads, Rear headroom compromised on cars with the panoramic glass sunroof

What to Inspect:
  • Press and tap interior trim at the viewing, listening for hollow panels or loose clips
  • Sit in the rear with the sunroof option fitted if you carry tall passengers
  • Compare side-by-side against an A4 B9.5 - the materials difference is immediately obvious

Compromised Luggage Space on Quattro and Plug-in e-Hybrid Variants

MinorInterior & Trim

Despite moving to a practical hatchback tailgate on the saloon body, packaging constraints on four-wheel-drive and plug-in hybrid variants severely penalise usable boot volume. RAC Drive warned that quattro models lose space, bringing cargo capacity down to 417 litres (smaller than an Audi A3 saloon), while the e-hybrid drops further to just 331 litres. Auto Express similarly noted the load bay lacks underfloor storage or dedicated cable compartments. For family buyers or company-car drivers carrying pushchairs or holiday luggage, the raised boot floor on quattro and hybrid models represents a substantial volume drop from the outgoing A4 Avant.

Est. Repair Cost: £0 (packaging constraint) / £150–£300 for bespoke fitted luggage or roof box carriers
Warning Signs:

Boot capacity restricted to just 417 litres on quattro or 331 litres on e-hybrid variants, Raised boot floor eliminating underfloor storage and forcing charging cables into the main load area, Difficulty fitting bulky prams or four large suitcases under the luggage cover

What to Inspect:
  • Inspect the luggage compartment with your typical pushchair or golf bag during the test drive
  • Verify whether the vehicle is front-wheel drive (476L), quattro (417L), or e-hybrid (331L)
  • Check that the 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat release levers in the boot operate smoothly
