Common Problems with the
2006 Caterham Seven (Rover K-Series)

End of the K-Series supply: MG Rover's collapse in 2005 ended Rover engine production, so Caterham phased the K-Series out of the mainstream Seven range from 2006 and built out the remaining K-Series Classics from existing engine stock until around 2013, while the Ford Sigma Roadsport became the volume model.

What changed for 2006

  • •MG Rover collapse ends K-Series engine supply (2005)
  • •Roadsport Sigma launched from 2006 as the K-Series replacement
  • •K-Series Classics continue in small numbers until around 2013
  • •SV wide-chassis K-Series offered alongside narrow S3

Common MOT watch-outs

  • !Lambda/emissions failures are the most common Seven S3 MOT fault (DVSA data)
  • !Lamps, reflectors and electrical faults dominate Seven MOT failures
  • !Worn suspension bushes and wishbones on high-mileage K-Series cars

All Known Issues

Head Gasket Failure (HGF)

SeriousEngine

The Rover K-Series engine is prone to head gasket failure due to its small coolant capacity and "sandwich" construction.

Est. Repair Cost: £600–£1,200
Warning Signs:

Loss of coolant, Overheating, Oil in coolant / Coolant in oil

What to Inspect:
  • Check for an MLS (Multi-Layer Steel) gasket upgrade.
  • Verify the liner heights if the head is off.

Cooling System Degradation

SeriousCooling System

The K-Series has a very small coolant capacity, making it intolerant of any cooling system weakness. Coolant pipes perish during winter storage, header tank caps fail and fan switches can stick, all leading to rapid overheating.

Est. Repair Cost: £100–£400
Warning Signs:

Overheating, Coolant loss, Mayonnaise in header tank, Steam from engine bay

What to Inspect:
  • Inspect all coolant hoses for cracks or perishing.
  • Check header tank cap seal.
  • Verify fan triggers correctly.
  • Consider upgraded silicone hoses and PRT thermostat.

Chassis Corrosion

SeriousSuspension & Chassis

The thin-wall tubular steel chassis can rust quickly if the powder coating is compromised. Corrosion typically starts at welds and joints where moisture and road salt become trapped, and can threaten structural integrity.

Est. Repair Cost: £800–£3,000
Warning Signs:

Rust spots on chassis tubes, Bubbling paint or coating, Structural concerns at MOT

What to Inspect:
  • Get the car on a ramp and inspect the full chassis.
  • Check suspension mounting points and footwell areas.
  • Look for signs of repair or re-welding.

Sump Foam Baffle Disintegration and Oil Starvation

SeriousEngine

The Rover K-Series was designed as a transverse engine, so its oil pick-up draws from one side of the sump. Under sustained cornering on track the oil can surge away from the pick-up, and Caterham fitted a foam sump baffle to keep it submerged. That foam disintegrates with age and heat cycling; loose fragments can block the oil feed pipe, and a missing baffle offers no surge protection, so the engine can be starved of oil and its bearings wiped. Caterham's standard oil pressure gauge is also notoriously unreliable, so low pressure may not be noticed until damage is done. Tracked K-Series Sevens usually have the baffle inspected, replaced or removed, or run a dry sump or oil accumulator.

Est. Repair Cost: £150–£400
Warning Signs:

Oil pressure reading erratic or falling in long corners, Rattle or knock from the top end after track use, Bearing noise, or seizure in extreme cases

What to Inspect:
  • Ask whether the sump foam baffle has been inspected, replaced or removed
  • Look for invoices showing sump baffle and gasket replacement
  • Check for a mechanical oil pressure gauge, oil accumulator or dry-sump fitment

Starter Motor "Click"

MinorElectrics & Electronics

Heat from the exhaust manifold often cooks the starter motor solenoid, leading to a "click" but no start when hot.

Est. Repair Cost: £150–£300
Warning Signs:

Car won't start when hot, Audible click from starter

What to Inspect:
  • Check for a heat shield on the starter motor.
  • Verify if a "relay mod" has been performed.

Buying Tips for 2006 Caterham Seven (Rover K-Series)

  • Confirm the block and head numbers match the V5C - many K-Series Sevens were re-engined
  • Check for an MLS head gasket and PRT thermostat upgrade invoice
  • Avoid cars laid up damp - small-capacity cooling pipes perish in storage
