Sump Foam Baffle Disintegration and Oil Starvation
SeriousEngineThe Rover K-Series was designed as a transverse engine, so its oil pick-up draws from one side of the sump. Under sustained cornering on track the oil can surge away from the pick-up, and Caterham fitted a foam sump baffle to keep it submerged. That foam disintegrates with age and heat cycling; loose fragments can block the oil feed pipe, and a missing baffle offers no surge protection, so the engine can be starved of oil and its bearings wiped. Caterham's standard oil pressure gauge is also notoriously unreliable, so low pressure may not be noticed until damage is done. Tracked K-Series Sevens usually have the baffle inspected, replaced or removed, or run a dry sump or oil accumulator.

- Ask whether the sump foam baffle has been inspected, replaced or removed
- Look for invoices showing sump baffle and gasket replacement
- Check for a mechanical oil pressure gauge, oil accumulator or dry-sump fitment
