Common Problems with the
2021 Chevrolet Corvette (C8)

The Corvette C8 arrived officially in the UK in 2021 as a factory right-hand-drive mid-engine supercar in Coupe and Convertible Stingray forms.

What changed for 2021

  • •First factory right-hand-drive Corvette in history, engineered specifically for the UK and international markets
  • •Introduction of mid-engine platform powered by 6.2-litre LT2 V8 (482PS UK-spec) and Tremec 8-speed dual-clutch transmission
  • •Standard fitment of Z51 Performance Package on all official UK cars, including Brembo brakes, eLSD, and performance exhaust

Common MOT watch-outs

  • !Headlamp aim misalignment on dynamic LED projection units
  • !Excessive inner edge tyre wear on staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch rear Michelin Pilot Sport tyres
  • !Front suspension hydraulic lift height sensor calibration drift

Tremec Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) Fluid Leaks and Valve Body Faults

SeriousGearbox & Transmission

Early Corvette C8 models equipped with the Tremec TR-9080 8-speed dual-clutch transmission can experience fluid weeping from the transmission oil pan gasket, as well as electronic sensor and solenoid valve body anomalies. Stamped steel pan flex and internal debris can cause transmission warning alerts ('Service Transmission - Put in Park'), rough shifting, or failure to engage reverse, requiring dealer flushes, revised aluminium pans, or valve body replacement.

Est. Repair Cost: £450–£1,800
Warning Signs:

'Service Transmission' or 'Transmission Fluid Hot' alert displayed on the digital instrument cluster, Delayed, harsh, or jerky engagement when shifting between Park, Reverse, and Drive, Transmission fluid dampness or reddish droplets pooling on the flat undertray beneath the gearbox, Transmission enters limp-home mode, skipping odd or even gears during acceleration

What to Inspect:
  • Remove the rear aerodynamic undertray and inspect the transmission pan gasket perimeter for fluid seepage
  • Verify documentary evidence that the mandatory canister DCT fluid filter was replaced at 7,500 miles
  • Scan the Transmission Control Module (TCM) for stored DTCs such as P1967, P1968, or solenoid pressure codes

Front Lift Hydraulic Reservoir Fluid Weepage (TSB N202321570)

ModerateSuspension & Chassis

On C8 Corvettes optioned with the front suspension lift system (which uses pressurized DOT 4 brake fluid to raise the nose by 40mm over speed humps), the original factory reservoir cap featured an atmospheric vent. Under hard driving or when actuating the lift on inclines, fluid slosh causes corrosive brake fluid to escape through the vent cap, pooling on the reservoir and potentially corroding surrounding bodywork and wiring. GM issued TSB N202321570 specifying an updated non-vented cap.

Est. Repair Cost: £40–£180
Warning Signs:

Visible fluid dampness or pooling on the top of the front lift reservoir beneath the frunk cowl cover, Sweet, acrid brake fluid smell coming from the front luggage compartment area, Stripped or blistered paint on metal chassis brackets near the front lift hydraulic pump, Front lift system error message displayed on the instrument cluster if fluid level drops too low

What to Inspect:
  • Remove the driver-side frunk cowl access panel and inspect the front lift fluid reservoir for wetness
  • Check the reservoir cap design: the original problematic cap has an open vent hole/slit, while the revised GM part (85165040) is sealed
  • Test the front lift toggle switch on the centre console, confirming that the nose raises and lowers smoothly without pump hesitation

Fuel Level Sensor and Fuel Pump Failure

ModerateFuel System

Early C8 Corvettes can suffer from failing fuel level sensors and fuel pumps. Erroneous low-fuel warnings, fluctuating gauge readings and check engine lights can appear even when the tank is full, leaving the driver unsure of actual range and at risk of running out of fuel unexpectedly. In some cases the fuel sender unit or pump requires dealer replacement, which involves draining and dropping the tank on the mid-engine layout. This is a known issue on early UK right-hand-drive examples and can be expensive given the limited Corvette dealer network.

Est. Repair Cost: £250–£650
Warning Signs:

Fuel gauge reads empty or fluctuates despite a full tank, 'Low Fuel' warning displayed with a full tank, Check engine light illuminated, Fuel range estimate drops unpredictably

What to Inspect:
  • Fill the tank and observe whether the gauge reads full and holds steady
  • Scan for fuel level sensor fault codes such as P0460–P0463
  • Ask whether the fuel sender or pump has been replaced under warranty

Buying Tips for 2021 Chevrolet Corvette (C8)

  • Check underneath the frunk cowl cover to confirm the front lift reservoir cap has been upgraded to the non-vented version
  • Test the dual-clutch transmission engagement from cold, verifying seamless shifting between reverse and first gear
