Citroën C1 (Mk2) Common Problems & Reliability
The second-generation Citroën C1 arrived in UK showrooms in July 2014, renewing the successful joint venture between PSA Peugeot Citroën and Toyota at the Kolín plant in the Czech Republic. Mechanically twinned with the Peugeot 108 and Toyota Aygo, the Mk2 C1 adopted far more distinctive, youthful front-end styling with two-tier headlamps and circular projector units. In addition to standard three- and five-door hatchback body styles, Citroën offered an Airscape model featuring an electrically retracting fabric full-length canvas roof. Drivetrains centred on the ultra-dependable Toyota-developed 1.0-litre 1KR-FE three-cylinder petrol engine (68hp at launch, revised to 72hp in 2018), with PSA’s punchier 82hp 1.2-litre PureTech petrol offered until 2018. For urban commuters and newly qualified drivers in the UK, the C1 represented low running costs, group 6–10 insurance ratings and road-tax exemption or sub-£20 VED on pre-2017 registrations. While spartan cabin plastics and tight rear boot space reflect its budget city car origins, light controls and a tiny 4.8m turning circle make it an agile town companion when properly maintained.

Most Common Citroën C1 (Mk2) Faults & Repair Costs
1.0 VTi clutch wear and slip
Stop-start urban driving and repeated hill starts cause premature wear to the friction plate on the 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine. A high bite point develops, followed by slipping under load in third or fourth gear and burning smells when executing parking manoeuvres.
Clutch pedal biting point is right at the top of travel, Engine revs flare without acceleration in third gear under load, Acrid burning friction smell during hill starts or tight parking manoeuvres, Judder through the pedal when engaging first gear from standstill
- Perform a hill start to assess where the clutch pedal engages in travel
- Accelerate firmly from 30mph in third gear to test for clutch slippage
- Inspect the service history for invoices showing clutch kit or release bearing renewal
Boot and rear light cluster water ingress
Rainwater penetrates through perishing foam gaskets around the high-level third brake light, rear light cluster mountings and the frameless glass tailgate seal. Water pools in the spare wheel recess, soaking boot carpets and causing misted glass and electrical earthing faults.
Standing water or damp residue in the spare wheel well under the boot floor, Musty damp odour throughout the interior cabin, Persistent condensation on the inside of the rear window glass, Damp or stained carpet padding in the luggage compartment
- Lift the boot floor carpet completely and check the spare wheel well for rust or water
- Inspect the high-level brake lamp foam gasket for perished or pinched rubber
- Check the inner rear light cluster mounting studs for moisture tidemarks
Front suspension drop link and lower arm bush wear
Potholed UK urban roads degrade the rubber ball joints on the anti-roll bar drop links and the front lower wishbone bushes. Play develops quickly, causing loud clonking noises over speed cushions and rough tarmac, accompanied by loose steering response and uneven tyre wear.
Clattering or knocking sounds from front wheel arches over speed bumps, Vague steering feedback and wander when traversing uneven tarmac, Uneven wear along the inside or outside front tyre tread shoulders
- Drive slowly over speed cushions with windows wound down to listen for front suspension knocks
- Inspect recent MOT test history for advisories regarding suspension joint play
- Examine front tyre shoulders for feathered or uneven tread wear patterns
