Inboard Rear Disc Brake Caliper Seizure and Diff Seal Oil Contamination
ModerateBrakesJaguar's independent rear suspension places the disc brakes and Girling calipers inboard, bolted directly to either side of the differential carrier. While reducing unsprung weight, this mounts the brakes adjacent to hot exhaust pipes and differential output seals. Ageing differential seals weep hypoid gear oil directly onto the brake rotors and friction pads, ruining braking efficiency. Furthermore, heat soak from the exhaust and road grime bake the caliper pistons, causing them to seize. Overhauling the rear brakes is notoriously labour-intensive, typically requiring the complete independent rear suspension cage to be unbolted and lowered.
Severely degraded handbrake holding performance on steep UK test hills, Pungent burnt gear oil smell and smoke rising from the rear axle area after driving, Vehicle pulling or dragging from the rear due to stuck handbrake linkage levers, Weak overall pedal bite with extensive brake pedal travel before decelerating
- Inspect the underside of the rear subframe cage for oily differential output drips
- Check rear brake disc surfaces with a mirror and light for gear oil contamination
- Test the handbrake lever mechanism for free movement and positive wheel lockup
- Confirm whether previous invoices show complete rear suspension drop and caliper rebuild
