1.6 TDCi Fuel Injector Copper Washer Leak and Turbo Failure
SeriousEngineThe 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine is vulnerable to combustion gas blow-by past the copper injector base washers. As the crush washers erode, unburnt diesel fuel and combustion carbon blow past the injector body, creating a hardened black tar deposit around the cylinder head known as the black death. Carbon contaminants eventually enter the engine oil gallery, creating sludge that blocks the banjo bolt micro-mesh oil feed filter to the turbocharger. Oil starvation causes rapid turbocharger bearing failure, turbine destruction, and catastrophic engine runaway if oil is ingested into the intake.
Rhythmic chuffing or puffing sound from the top of the engine at idle, Pungent burnt diesel or exhaust fume smell circulating through the cabin vents, Thick black tar-like carbon encrustation around the fuel injector clamps, Siren-like whining noise from the turbocharger under acceleration or loss of boost power
- Remove the decorative engine acoustic cover and inspect the injector wells for wet fuel or hard black tar
- Listen with the engine idling for rhythmic puffing compression leaks around each cylinder injector base
- Ask for documented proof of regular oil flushes and turbo oil feed banjo bolt filter removal or replacement
- Check the oil dipstick for severe carbon contamination, sludge, or diesel dilution
