TDCi Injector & DMF Failure
SeriousFuel SystemThe 2.0 and 2.2 TDCi Duratorq engines use a high-pressure Delphi common-rail fuel system notorious for failing injectors. Excessive leak-off drops common-rail pressure under load, causing flashing glow plug lights, limp-home mode, and cut-outs. Furthermore, the Delphi high-pressure pump can shed microscopic metallic swarf, circulating through the fuel system and destroying all four injectors. Simultaneously, the dual-mass flywheel (DMF) wears prematurely, creating loud metallic rattles and shedding metallic dust into the starter motor.
Flashing amber glow-plug warning light and sudden engine cut-out under hard acceleration, Loud metallic chattering or rattling noise from the gearbox bellhousing at idle, Excessive white, grey, or black smoke on cold start accompanied by hunting idle, Clutch pedal pulsing against the foot and starter motor grinding or struggling to crank
- Insist on starting the engine from dead cold, checking for prolonged cranking and white smoke
- Listen at idle for bellhousing chatter that quietens when depressing the clutch pedal fully
- Perform a firm acceleration run in 3rd or 4th gear to ensure glow plug light does not flash
