Chassis Rail and Outrigger Corrosion
SeriousSuspension & ChassisThe closed box sections of the ladder-frame chassis are exceptionally prone to retaining road salt, surface water, and agricultural mud. Over time, severe corrosion develops from the inside out, particularly around the rear axle kick-ups, rear leaf spring hanger brackets, and the fuel tank mounting outriggers. If neglected, perforation weakens the structural backbone of the vehicle, resulting in MOT failure and requiring expensive fabrication of replacement chassis repair sections.
Visible flaking rust, metal delamination, and perforation on rear chassis rails, MOT failure for structural corrosion within prescribed areas of suspension mountings, Sagging or misaligned rear spring hanger brackets and fuel tank support straps
- Probe the rear chassis rails and spring hangers with a screwdriver or inspection hammer
- Check the inner box sections above the fuel tank where mud and salt trap moisture
- Examine previous chassis welding repairs for proper penetration and MOT compliance
