All Known Issues

Turbocharger Failure (2.0d)

SeriousEngine

Premature turbo failure is common on the 2.0L diesel, often caused by the same oil dilution issue that affects the timing chain.

Est. Repair Cost: £1,200–£2,000
Warning Signs:

High-pitched whining or "police siren" noise, Loss of power, Excessive smoke from exhaust

What to Inspect:
  • Listen for turbo noise under acceleration during the test drive

Timing Chain Failure (2.0d Ingenium)

SeriousEngine

The 2.0 diesel Ingenium engine in the F-Pace is prone to timing chain stretch and failure, the same issue affecting the XE, XF and E-Pace. Oil dilution from interrupted DPF regenerations combined with weak chain guides cause premature wear. If the chain snaps, it destroys the engine.

Est. Repair Cost: £1,800–£3,500
Warning Signs:

Metallic rattling noise on cold start, Restricted performance message, Engine warning light (P0016), Engine misfires or goes into limp mode

What to Inspect:
  • Listen for timing chain rattle from a cold start
  • Check service history for oil changes every 7k-10k miles
  • Verify the Oil Dilution Factor has been reset at services

Water Pump Failure (3.0SC & 5.0 V8)

SeriousCooling System

The water pumps on 3.0 supercharged V6 and 5.0 V8 F-Pace models are prone to premature failure, sometimes lasting less than 20,000 miles. Coolant enters the bearing housing and corrodes it, causing the impeller shaft seal to leak. The small coolant pipe connecting to the pump also has fragile plastic connectors that break on removal.

Est. Repair Cost: £400–£800
Warning Signs:

Low coolant warning light, Sweet smell of coolant from engine bay, Visible coolant residue around water pump pulley, Overheating in traffic

What to Inspect:
  • Inspect the front of the engine for coolant residue
  • Check service history for water pump replacement
  • Verify coolant level is correct

InControl Touch Pro Infotainment Freeze

MinorInterior & Trim

The InControl Touch Pro infotainment system in early F-Pace models freezes, reboots mid-drive, or becomes unresponsive to touch input. The system uses an underpowered processor that struggles with navigation and media simultaneously, especially in warm weather.

Est. Repair Cost: £0–£200
Warning Signs:

Touchscreen unresponsive to input, System reboots while driving, Bluetooth audio cutting out, Navigation freezing mid-route

What to Inspect:
  • Test the infotainment thoroughly including navigation, Bluetooth and climate controls
  • Check if the latest software is installed
  • Test in warm conditions if possible

Buying Tips for 2017–2020 Jaguar F-Pace

  • Listen for "whining" from the turbochargers on 2.0d models—an early sign of failure due to oil starvation.
  • Check for water ingress around the panoramic sunroof.
  • The 2021 facelift models are significantly more reliable and have a much better interior.
