Common Problems with the
2007 Jeep Patriot

UK launch in August 2007 with a 2.4-litre petrol and Volkswagen-sourced 2.0-litre CRD diesel, Freedom Drive I four-wheel drive and Sport or Limited trims.

What changed for 2007

  • •UK launch in August 2007 at £15,995–£18,795, undercutting the RAV4, CR-V and Freelander
  • •2.4-litre 168bhp petrol and Volkswagen 2.0-litre CRD diesel (138bhp, 229lb ft)
  • •Freedom Drive I full-time electronically controlled all-wheel drive with a locking mode
  • •Most UK sales (around 85%) were diesel-powered with a six-speed manual gearbox

Common MOT watch-outs

  • !Split turbo pipe on the 2.0-litre CRD reducing mid-range pull
  • !Clutch slip on manual models, especially when used for towing
  • !Air-conditioning and electrical switch failures on early examples
  • !Corroded alloy wheels with lacquer failure and water under the finish

Clutch slip on manual gearbox models

ModerateGearbox & Transmission

The Patriot's manual gearbox can suffer clutch slip, particularly on diesel examples used for towing. Practical Caravan advises finding a hill and driving up it in a high gear — if the engine revs rise without the car accelerating, the clutch is slipping. RAC prices a clutch assembly at around £300 for a 2009 Patriot 2.0 CRD Sport. A slipping clutch left unattended can damage the flywheel, raising the bill further, and towing aggravates the wear.

Est. Repair Cost: £250–£550 (clutch assembly and flywheel inspection)
Warning Signs:

Engine revs rise without corresponding acceleration under load, A burning smell after hard acceleration or hill climbing, Difficulty pulling away smoothly in first gear, Clutch pedal that feels soft or engages at the top of its travel

What to Inspect:
  • Drive up a hill in a high gear and watch for revs rising without speed gain
  • Pull away firmly in first gear and check for shudder or slip
  • Smell for a burning-oil or clutch odour after a spirited test drive
  • Ask whether the clutch has been replaced, especially on high-mileage diesel towers

Alloy wheel corrosion and lacquer failure

MinorBodywork & Rust

The Patriot's alloy wheels are prone to corrosion and lacquer failure. Practical Caravan reports the lacquer coating is not high quality and water gets underneath, which is unsightly and costs at least £250 to refinish a full set. RAC warns the wheels are easy to scratch during enthusiastic off-roading and that excessive wheel damage should act as a warning of the car's history. While cosmetic rather than structural, corroded wheels are a common and visible issue on UK Patriots and add to the cost of putting a used example right.

Est. Repair Cost: £100–£300 (refinishing a full set of alloy wheels)
Warning Signs:

White or milky patches under the alloy wheel lacquer, Flaking or peeling wheel finish around the rim edges, Scratched or kerbed wheels indicating off-road or clumsy use, Visible corrosion on the wheel faces or inner barrels

What to Inspect:
  • Inspect all four wheels for lacquer failure, peeling and white corrosion patches
  • Check for deep kerbing or scratches that hint at heavy off-road use
  • Look for water trapped under the lacquer around the rim edges
  • Budget at least £250 to refinish a full set if corrosion is widespread

Air-conditioning and electrical switch failures

MinorElectrics & Electronics

The Patriot's interior is built to a low cost, and its electrical switches and air conditioning are a recurring source of niggle. Practical Caravan warns that air-conditioning failures seem quite common and tells buyers to check everything electrical: windows, central locking and anything else with a switch. Parkers describes the cabin as poor quality with cheap plastics and flimsy switches. A switch that sticks, works only intermittently or fails entirely, and an air conditioner that blows warm, are cheap to put right individually but add up on a low-value used car. Test every switch and the air conditioning during the viewing before handing over money.

Est. Repair Cost: £80–£200 (air-conditioning regas or switch repair)
Warning Signs:

Air conditioning blows warm or does not engage, Window or central locking switches work intermittently, Dashboard or centre-console switches feel loose or stick, Interior trim creaks around the switchgear

What to Inspect:
  • Run the air conditioning and confirm it blows cold within a minute
  • Operate every window, central locking and dashboard switch repeatedly
  • Press the switches and buttons for looseness, stickiness or intermittent action
  • Listen for the air-conditioning compressor to engage without unusual noise

Buying Tips for 2007 Jeep Patriot

  • Prefer the Mercedes 2.2 CRD (from 2010) over the early Volkswagen 2.0 CRD if budget allows
  • Avoid the 2.4-litre petrol with CVT automatic, which is underpowered and troublesome
  • Test the air conditioning and every electrical switch before buying
  • Check for damp footwells and signs of water leaks around the seals
