Common Problems with the
1990 Land Rover Defender (Classic L316)

The 1991 model-year Ninety and One Ten were renamed Defender 90 and Defender 110 once the Discovery took the 'Land Rover' name beyond a single model, with the One Two Seven becoming the 130 on its own purpose-built chassis. The Discovery-derived 200Tdi turbodiesel brought 107-111bhp, an alloy head, intercooling and a fixed oil-breather problem; the near-new 300Tdi followed in 1994 and the R380 five-speed gearbox with it.

What changed for 1990

  • •Defender 90, 110 and 130 naming adopted from the 1991 model year
  • •200Tdi then 300Tdi turbo-diesels with a modern alloy cylinder head
  • •Special editions such as the 1992 90SV begin the climb upmarket
