Front Lower Suspension Ball Joint Wear and Separation
SeriousSuspension & ChassisThe front lower ball joints on the XE10 double-wishbone suspension carry substantial dynamic loads. Over time, the internal nylon seat wears out and the protective rubber boot perishes, allowing water and road grit to enter and accelerate wear. In advanced cases, the ball joint develops severe play and can pull out of its housing entirely, causing the front wheel to collapse into the wing. This is a well-known MOT failure and safety risk on older UK cars.
Clunking or knocking noise from the front wheels over small road bumps, Vague or wander in steering feel at motorway speeds, Creaking sound when turning the steering wheel at low speeds or parking, Uneven feathering or wear on the inside shoulder of the front tyres
- Jack up the front corner and rock the wheel vertically to feel for play in the lower ball joint
- Inspect the ball joint rubber dust boot for splits, missing retaining clips, or grease leakage
- Review MOT test history for recurring advisories regarding front suspension pin or bush play
