Common MG Problems
MG’s history is split between the classic Rover-era "Zed" cars, known for driver engagement and head-gasket issues, and the modern SAIC-era vehicles which have dominated the UK EV market with high-value models like the MG4 and ZS EV.
Common MG trouble spots
- •K-Series Engine (Classic): Head gasket failure is extremely common but can be permanently fixed with uprated parts.
- •Modern Infotainment: Lag and occasional system crashes affect most models from 2017–2021.
- •MG4 Coolant Leaks: Some owners report blue/green fluid leaks from the drive unit cooling system.
What to check on used MGs
- ✓For classic MG ZR/ZS/ZT models, evidence of a Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) head gasket replacement is the most important piece of history.
- ✓For modern EV models (ZS EV and MG4), ensure software is up to date to resolve early charging and range-display glitches.
- ✓Check the infotainment responsiveness on 2017–2022 models; it can be slow to boot and frustrating to use for climate controls.

MG4
A highly acclaimed electric hatchback. It is much more advanced than the ZS EV but has some early software teething issues.
MG5 EV
A unique electric estate car in the UK market. Popular with high-mileage users and generally very robust.
MG HS
MG’s larger SUV, available as petrol or PHEV. Offers a more premium interior but shares some electronic traits with the ZS.
MG ZS EV
One of the most affordable family EVs in the UK. The 2021 facelift (Long Range) significantly improved the battery and tech.
MG ZS (Modern Petrol)
The SAIC-era ZS petrol offers excellent value. It uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated or 1.0-litre turbocharged engine.
MG3
A budget-focused supermini that offers sharp handling but suffers from an older engine design and some build quality compromises.
MG TF
The UK’s best-selling mid-engined roadster for years. Great fun but requires diligent maintenance of the cooling system due to its mid-engine layout.
MG ZR
Based on the Rover 25, the ZR was a massive UK success. It’s a great-handling "hot" hatch but requires vigilant cooling system maintenance.
MG ZS (Classic)
Based on the Rover 45, the classic ZS is often cited as one of the best-handling front-wheel-drive cars of its era, especially in V6 (180) form.
MG ZT / ZT-T
Based on the Rover 75, the ZT offered a more aggressive look and firmer handling. The CDTi diesel (BMW engine) is the pick for reliability.
MGF
The precursor to the TF, featuring Hydragas suspension for a more comfortable ride. It was a huge success but requires specific maintenance of its suspension and cooling systems.
