Common MG Rover Problems
The MG Rover Group (2000–2005) produced some of the most characterful British cars of the modern era. While the brands are now separate (MG is owned by SAIC, Rover is defunct), the cars from this period share identical mechanical platforms and are often grouped together by enthusiasts and for maintenance.
Common MG Rover trouble spots
- •K-Series Head Gasket: The most prevalent issue across the range, though well-understood and fixable.
- •Plenum Drains: Blocked drains on the 75/ZT platform can lead to terminal ECU damage.
- •VIS Motors: Variable intake system failures on KV6 (V6) engines affect both brands.
- •SCU Relay Failure: Affects the reliability of electrical systems on facelift (2003-2005) models.
What to check on used MG Rovers
- ✓The "K-Series" engine is the heart of most MG Rover cars. Vigilant cooling system maintenance is the key to longevity.
- ✓Check for the "Pektron" SCU issues on 2003+ models; this unit controls the alarm, wipers, and central locking.
- ✓Rust is becoming more common on the rear wheel arches and sills across all models.
- ✓The 2.0 CDTi diesel engine used in the 75 and ZT is a BMW M47 unit and is generally the most reliable high-mileage choice.
