Common Problems with the
2010 MINI Countryman (R60)

Unveiled at the Geneva show in March 2010 and on sale in the UK from 18 September 2010 from about £16k, the R60 was the first four-door Mini, the first with ALL4 four-wheel drive, and the first built outside the UK - by Magna Steyr in Graz. Early models: One, Cooper, N14-turbo Cooper S 184, and One D/Cooper D diesels using the Peugeot-derived DV6; the Cooper SD 2.0 and autos arrived from spring 2011, the 218hp JCW in autumn 2012.

What changed for 2010

  • •ALL4 electrified-hydraulic coupling introduced the Mini line to all-wheel drive
  • •Assembled by Magna Steyr in Austria, unlike all previous MINIs
  • •Five-star Euro NCAP rating awarded November 2010

Common MOT watch-outs

  • !Clutch judder and stalling on 2010-2012 cars, revised from November 2012
  • !Front suspension bushes and rear brake corrosion
  • !Tyre mismatch risk on ALL4 cars with part-worn sets
  • !Coolant seepage from the N14 turbo cars of the same years

All Known Issues

Clutch and Flywheel Wear (ALL4)

SeriousGearbox & Transmission

Manual ALL4 Countrymans are heavy and can wear clutches and dual-mass flywheels much faster than a Hatch or Clubman.

Est. Repair Cost: £1,000–£1,800
Warning Signs:

High bite point, Judder pulling away, Rattle at idle with clutch up

What to Inspect:
  • Perform several hill starts
  • Listen for DMF chatter at idle
  • Inspect for mismatched tyres that may also stress the driveline

Timing Chain Stretch

SeriousEngine

Prince petrol engines in early Countryman models can stretch timing chains, especially on Cooper S cars serviced on long intervals.

Est. Repair Cost: £600–£1,200
Warning Signs:

Cold-start rattle, Camshaft timing faults, Uneven idle and hesitation

What to Inspect:
  • Start the engine cold
  • Ask whether it is an N14 or later N18 car
  • Look for short oil-service intervals and chain-kit invoices

High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP)

SeriousFuel System

Turbo petrol Countrymans can suffer HPFP failures, leading to poor hot starts and limp mode under load.

Est. Repair Cost: £500–£900
Warning Signs:

Long cranking, Flat acceleration, Fuel-pressure fault codes

What to Inspect:
  • Drive it hard once warm
  • Check for HPFP replacement history
  • Be wary of recent battery changes masking start problems

Thermostat Housing Leak

ModerateCooling System

The plastic thermostat assembly cracks and seeps coolant, a common issue made worse by the Countryman’s cramped engine bay.

Est. Repair Cost: £200–£450
Warning Signs:

Sweet smell from the engine bay, Coolant residue around the housing, Temperature fluctuation in traffic

What to Inspect:
  • Inspect housing seams and hose joints
  • Check for signs of repeated topping up
  • Confirm the fan cuts in correctly after a hot drive

Buying Tips for 2010 MINI Countryman (R60)

  • Skip the cheapest early Cooper S ALL4 - N14 chain risk plus AWD complexity is the worst pairing in the range
  • Cars from November 2012 use the revised clutch material and software after MINI acknowledged the stalling problem
