Common Problems with the
2012 MINI Roadster (R59)

Revealed as a concept in 2009, launched at Detroit in January 2012 and announced for the UK on 16 April 2012, the Roadster ran unchanged until 2015. Its electric soft top works at up to 20 mph in 18 seconds, is single-layer rather than the Convertible's multi-ply hood, and came in black only with a rear window but no quarter window behind the door. Engines were the N18 Prince family (122hp Cooper, 184hp Cooper S, 211-218hp JCW) and the N47 2.0 SD diesel, all Oxford-built on the R56 underpinnings.

What changed for 2012

  • •First and only soft-top two-seater in the BMW-era range
  • •Shared mechanicals with the Coupe, so parts interchange across R58/R59
  • •End-of-production for both body styles announced February 2015

Common MOT watch-outs

  • !Roof seals, lights and moisture in the tonneau area
  • !Front suspension bushes, drop links and worn tyres
  • !Corroded brake pipes on summer-only cars
  • !Exhaust condition on the early turbo petrol cars

N18 timing chain stretch and cold-start death rattle (Cooper S and JCW)

SeriousEngine

Same engine as the Coupe and the same story: the 184hp Cooper S and 218hp JCW N18 Prince turbo is chain-driven with Valvetronic, and PistonHeads records the chain wearing on turbocharged cars when oil levels drop or heat degrades it across long service intervals, quoting around £850 to replace at a specialist, while Lohen prices its N18 chain-tensioner death-rattle fix at £820 fitted. The Roadster's enthusiast owners drive the hard way round, so cold-start rattle warrants serious suspicion; a skipped chain on an N18 is terminal to the engine.

Est. Repair Cost: £750-£950 specialist chain and tensioner job
Warning Signs:

Rattle for the first seconds of a cold start, Engine light with cam timing correlation codes, Oil-level warnings or sludge in the filler cap

What to Inspect:
  • Insist on a cold start and listen with the bonnet up
  • Get chain or oil-service evidence in writing, not verbally
  • Have a specialist check timing adaptation with a diagnostic scan

Auxiliary water-pump circuit board fire risk - March 2019 recall

SeriousCooling System

PistonHeads lists the recall affecting the Roadster as the same range-wide auxiliary water-pump campaign of March 2019: cars built February and March 2011, across MINI and several BMW models, could have a pump circuit board short that Auto Express notes could potentially lead to a fire; the remedy is a new auxiliary pump, done free in campaign. Early Roadster build periods overlapped those production months, and PistonHeads says affected pumps were sometimes diagnosed as faulty without symptoms - so verify by VIN rather than trusting a clean-looking engine bay.

Est. Repair Cost: £0 under recall; roughly £250-£500 for the pump once out of campaign
Warning Signs:

None required - failures could occur without drivability symptoms, Burning smell or smoke from the engine bay in the worst case, Coolant loss or warning with no visible hose leak

What to Inspect:
  • Identify build month and query any early car at a MINI retailer by VIN
  • Ask for recall completion paperwork before purchase
  • Torch-check the auxiliary pump area for replacement evidence or seepage

Soft-top wear, noise and handle-lock faults

ModerateBodywork & Rust

Auto Express's used check-up is direct about the Roadster top: every UK car has an electric roof with a locking handle the driver must release, the hood is a noisier single-layer item versus the Convertible's multi-layer roof, and a wind deflector was optional. PistonHeads adds that the top deploys in 18 seconds at up to 20 mph and is single-layer only. In practice that means perished or fouled seals, wind roar around the frame, sticking or worn handle locks, and pump or motor tiredness on cars that never run the roof through its cycle. Nothing catastrophic, but the roof is the whole value of the car and it is expensive to put right.

Est. Repair Cost: £300-£1,200 from seal and handle repairs through to pump or motor replacement
Warning Signs:

Roof hesitating, stopping or making laboured pump noises mid-cycle, Wind roar or draughts around the rear side windows with the top up, Locking handle stiff, gritty or failing to latch fully, Visible creasing, mould or fraying along the hood folds

What to Inspect:
  • Cycle the roof up and down twice and listen through the full travel
  • Feel inside the tonneau for damp and clear any blocked drain channels
  • Operate the manual handle lock and check the hood seating against the gutters
  • Ask whether the wind deflector is present - missing hardware signals careless ownership

Buying Tips for 2012 MINI Roadster (R59)

  • A car kept garaged with regular roof cycles is worth a premium over a neglected example
  • Check the boot for the wind deflector and confirm all roof hardware is present
