Subframe, A-panel and floor rot
SeriousBodywork & RustOn the classic Mini the corrosion sits on structural parts, and the buying guides list it in one breath: the A-panels at the wing/door joint, the front and rear subframes and their structural mounting points, the floors, inner and outer sills, the front wings and headlamp surrounds, the boot floor and battery box, and the door bottoms. Rear subframe towers inside the boot corrode from condensation, and floors rot under carpets where door and windscreen seals have perished. Because the subframes carry the suspension and steering, corrosion there changes handling and can fail an inspection — and a car that looks straight on the road often hides a rotten subframe under the paint it was restored with.
Rust blistering at the joint between front wing and door, or around the headlamp surrounds, The car pulls or feels vague in steering as subframe mounting points distort, Soft floor pans under the carpets and a damp smell in the footwells, Rot in the boot floor around the battery box and the rear subframe towers
- Lift every carpet and check the floors, sills and battery box rather than trusting the trim
- Get the car on a ramp and inspect both subframes and every structural mounting point
- Probe the A-panel at the wing/door joint and the door bottoms with a screwdriver
- Ask for receipts for subframe or A-panel replacement and check the repair was done properly
