Intermediate Shaft (IMS) Bearing Failure
SeriousEngineThe factory single-row and dual-row intermediate shaft (IMS) ball bearings fitted to the M96 flat-six engine can lose lubrication when their rubber oil seals degrade. Engine oil washes out the internal bearing grease, causing ball bearings to overheat, gall, and disintegrate. If the bearing collapses, camshaft timing goes out of sync, causing piston-to-valve contact and catastrophic internal engine failure requiring a complete rebuild or replacement unit.
Metallic grinding or rattling noise audible from the rear of the engine bellhousing at idle, Fine magnetic metallic flakes or debris found in the engine oil filter housing during servicing, Sudden catastrophic engine seizure or severe loss of power accompanied by check engine illumination
- Demand invoices confirming an upgraded aftermarket IMS bearing (e.g. EPS cylindrical bearing or IMS Retrofit kit) has been fitted.
- Remove the oil filter element during pre-purchase inspection to check for shiny bronze or magnetic metal fragments.
- Listen carefully with a mechanic stethoscope to the lower bellhousing area with the engine idling at operating temperature.
