CamPro 1.6 Hydraulic Valve Lifter Carbon Sticking and Cold Tappet Noise
ModerateEngineThe 1.6-litre 16V CamPro engine fitted to the Satria Neo uses hydraulic lash adjusters (tappets) to maintain zero valve clearance. The oil feed passages feeding these adjusters within the cylinder head are exceptionally narrow and vulnerable to oil sludge or varnish. If oil changes are delayed or improper mineral oil is used, the lifters fail to pump up with oil pressure on cold starts. This results in a loud, rhythmic metallic tapping and clattering from the top of the engine that can persist even when warm, causing rough cold running and accelerated camshaft lobe wear.
Loud, rapid metallic ticking or clattering noise from the top cylinder head on cold startup, Ticking noise persists for several minutes until the engine oil reaches full operating temperature, Rough engine idle and minor misfires during the first minute of driving from cold
- Start the engine from completely stone cold and listen intently to the cylinder head valvetrain for ticking
- Check service records for evidence of regular synthetic 10W-40 or 5W-40 oil changes at 6,000 to 9,000-mile intervals
- Inspect the oil filler cap and under-cam cover area for black sludge or baked-on varnish deposits
