Front Suspension Swing-Arm and Steering Bush Wear
ModerateSteeringThe single front wheel on the Rialto is mounted on an unsprung leading/trailing swing-arm arrangement carrying the full weight of braking and cornering. Road potholes and speed cushions accelerate wear on the front pivot needle roller bearings and steering headstock bushes. Neglected grease lubrication leads to excessive slack, causing vagueness in the steering, front tyre scuffing, and severe MOT failure.
Excessive play in steering wheel before the front wheel responds, Wandering or darting across white lines and road camber transitions, Loud knocking clunk over tarmac potholes and dropped kerbs, Uneven tyre tread wear across the central front steering tyre
- Raise the front of the car on an axle stand and check the front swing-arm for lateral play.
- Check the headstock pivot bearings for notchiness when turning the steering from lock to lock.
- Inspect grease nipples on the front suspension assembly for regular lubrication.
