Common Problems with the
2017 Skoda Rapid

The 2017 facelift revised the bumpers, headlights (bi-xenon with LED running lights became available) and dash, and the key change under the bonnet was deleting the 1.2 TSI in favour of 95 and 110PS versions of the belt-driven 1.0 TSI three-cylinder, with the 1.4 TSI 125 and 1.6 TDI carrying over. UK trims settled into S, SE and Monte Carlo/Style. From 2019 the Scala took the liftback's job in the Skoda UK range and remaining Rapids were sold down through 2019.

What changed for 2017

  • •1.0 TSI three-cylinder turbo replaced the chain-driven 1.2 TSI across the range
  • •Facelift added new front and rear styling, updated assistance systems and a revised dashboard layout
  • •Diesel line-up simplified to 1.4 TDI 90 and 1.6 TDI 115 before being withdrawn

Common MOT watch-outs

  • !DPF blockage and emissions fails on urban-mileage diesels
  • !Brake disc and pad wear beyond expectation for claimed mileage
  • !Front suspension knocks from drop links and bushes on potholed routes

DSG (DQ200) dry-clutch judder and mechatronic wear

SeriousGearbox & Transmission

Automatic Rapids use the seven-speed DQ200 dry-clutch DSG, whose clutch pack wears like a clutch and whose mechatronic unit fails hydraulically. Fault File logs owner judder and slipping reports, including a full clutch and flywheel failure at only 6,000 miles, and points out that Skoda extended the gearbox warranty to five years/150,000km in 2013 and belatedly imposed a 40,000-mile mineral oil change in 2017 - proof the early 'lifetime fill' boxes struggled. DSG specialists Eco Torque attribute harsh or wrong shifts and loss of drive to mechatronic hydraulic leaks and TCU failures in the same 0AM unit. Out-of-warranty repairs run into four figures.

Est. Repair Cost: £1,000–£2,500
Warning Signs:

Judder or shudder pulling away, especially uphill or on the first junction after a cold start, Hesitant, clunky shifts between first and second, Gearbox warning light, flashing PRNDS or reduced-power limp mode

What to Inspect:
  • Set off from a dead stop several times with the engine cold and feel the clutch re-engage
  • Ask for evidence of 40k-mile DSG oil changes on 2017-onward cars and check for gearbox software campaign work
  • Walk away from any seller who says the judder will 'clear itself after relearning'

EGR and DPF failures after the dieselgate emissions fix

ModerateExhaust & Emissions

EA189 1.6 TDI Rapids took the mandatory NOx software fix, and the aftermath has been well documented. Fault File reports owners suffering EGR valve, injector and aftertreatment failures after the retrofit, with Skoda goodwill letters considering claims within 24 months of the fix on cars under 160,000 miles. Hypermiler, which tracked UK Skoda and VW owners' claims, found the same pattern - EGR, DPF, injector and pump failures - continuing after the 24-month 'trust building measure' window expired, leaving out-of-window owners with repair bills. Buy the fix history with the car, or choose a petrol.

Est. Repair Cost: £300–£650
Warning Signs:

Rough idle, shunting or sudden limp-home after the software update, Diesel smell and smoke from the exhaust during the emission regen cycle, Fault codes citing EGR flow or DPF differential pressure

What to Inspect:
  • Ask whether the emissions retrofit was done and when; a dealer print-out settles it
  • Check the service file for post-fix EGR or injector work and any goodwill invoice
  • Look at MOT history for repeat emissions failures on supposedly fixed cars

Harsh ride, premature suspension wear and brake disc issues

ModerateSuspension & Chassis

Rapid ride quality has been a running complaint since launch - Auto Express called the body style jittery over rough roads in its used review, and low-grade trims feel unsettled on broken UK tarmac - and the hardware backs the grumble. Fault File's MOT analysis shows suspension as the standout fail category for the class, while Get Car Wise tracks suspension joints detaching, damper failure and bushes wearing at multiples of the fleet average, peaking at 40-60k miles on 1.6 diesels, plus unusually early brake disc wear on those same cars.

Est. Repair Cost: £150–£400 per corner
Warning Signs:

Firm, jittery ride that crashes over expansion joints and speed cushions, Knocks and clonks from the front end at low speed over bumps, Steering notching or a lip you can feel on the edge of the brake discs

What to Inspect:
  • Take a test drive on the worst road you own the car for; note the ride against a Fabia for comparison
  • Listen over broken tarmac at walking pace for drop-link clonks and have someone rock the wheel
  • Read the car's own MOT history for recurring suspension advisories and inspect disc edges for a pronounced lip
