Common Problems with the
2006 Skoda Roomster

UK sales began in June 2006 on the Fabia's A4 (PQ34) platform, built at Kvasiny. Petrols were the 64bhp 1.2 12V, 85bhp 1.4 16V and 105bhp 1.6 16V (Aisin six-speed auto on 1.6); diesels the three-cylinder 1.4 TDI PD in 69 and 79bhp forms and the 1.9 TDI PD 104. VarioFlex rear seats, panoramic roof option and, from late 2006, raised-and-cladded Scout trim.

What changed for 2006

  • •First all-new Skoda of the Volkswagen era styled in-house under Thomas Ingenlath
  • •VarioFlex 40-20-40 rear bench: sliding, reclining, individually removable seats
  • •Scout rugged trim arrived late 2006 and became a UK sales favourite

Common MOT watch-outs

  • !Front drop links, wishbone bushes and top mounts clonking by 60-80k miles
  • !Corroded brake pipes and binding calipers flagged on older cars
  • !Misted headlamp lenses and perished rear wiper mechanism

All Known Issues

Front suspension clunks, worn bushes and spring failures

ModerateSuspension & Chassis

The Roomster shares the Fabia/Polo PQ34 front axle, and UK potholes and grit take it hard. Fault File's measured MOT record shows bushes and ball joints recorded on 18.5 per cent of tests at 10-15 years old against a 9.0 per cent class average, with owners tracing clonks to drop links, lower-arm bushes and top mounts from around 60,000 miles; Get Car Wise's MOT analysis adds premature front coil spring failure - fractures from the lower coils where corrosion starts - at rates many times the fleet average, documented from as low as 20,000 miles.

Est. Repair Cost: £80–£150 per side
Warning Signs:

Clonk or knock from the front over broken tarmac and speed cushions, Steering feeling notched or wandering with play at the wheel, Uneven tyre wear or a corner that sits lower than the other

What to Inspect:
  • Drive slowly over rough ground with the windows down and listen for front-end clunks
  • Rock the steering wheel with a helper while you rest a hand on each front tyre to feel for joint play
  • Shine a torch at the lower coils of each front spring for corrosion and snapped windings

Seizing brake calipers and binding flagged at MOT

ModerateBrakes

Roomsters turn up at the test bench with brakes dragging: Fault File's MOT data records binding brakes on 3.4 per cent of 10-15-year-old tests against a 1.4 per cent class average, and Get Car Wise measures caliper-seizure failures at up to 10.4 times the fleet average across all engine variants, worsening with age and mileage. The usual story is a slide pin or piston corrosion on cars that do short school runs and never get the brakes hot enough to boil off moisture. A seized caliper cooks the disc, drags fuel economy and is an instant MOT fail.

Est. Repair Cost: £120–£250 per caliper
Warning Signs:

One wheel noticeably hotter than the others after a drive, Car pulls or slows itself on the flat when you lift off, Notching through the pedal at low speed or a faint burning smell from one corner

What to Inspect:
  • Hover a hand near each wheel hub after the test drive and compare temperatures
  • Look through the spokes for a pad worn unevenly or a scored, blued disc
  • Read the MOT history for repeat brake advisories before offering

Buying Tips for 2006 Skoda Roomster

  • Pre-2010 cars with the 1.4/1.6 MPI petrols are simple but slow; the 1.6 auto suits town drivers
  • Three-cylinder 1.4 TDI PD diesels are buzzy and loud - live with one on a test drive before buying
  • Check for damp headliner on panoramic-roof cars; leaking roofs are an early-car sore point
