Power steering assistance failure and rack or column wear
SeriousSteeringBreakerYard lists power steering failure as a known Meriva problem, saying the assist can go and make the car very hard to manoeuvre, that in some cases the steering has jammed, and that the repair is a new steering rack and column rather than a component rebuild. GetCarWise's Meriva buying guide prices the assist-side hardware at £300-£600 for a pump and £150-£300 for hoses, which is why a car with heavy steering in the forecourt test is rarely worth the advertised price. Loss of assistance at parking speeds is a safety issue as well as a bill.

- Turn the wheel from lock to lock several times on the viewing, first stationary then rolling slowly
- Watch the instrument panel for a steering warning lamp during a cold start and a hot restart
- Check the power steering fluid level and look for wetness along the hoses and rack
- Ask whether the rack or column has been renewed before, because repeat failures point at a wiring or sensor fault
