Common Problems with the
2021–2022 Volkswagen ID.4

Early ID.4s suffered from slow, buggy software that would freeze, drop connections, or trigger erroneous warning lights. OTA updates have improved things but some cars need dealer visits.

The 12V auxiliary battery degrades faster than expected, triggering a cascade of seemingly unrelated high-voltage system errors. A weak 12V battery can prevent the car from starting entirely.

The capacitive touch flush door handles can become unresponsive or fail to detect touch, especially in cold weather. The mechanical backup release inside the handle often needs to be used.

Some ID.4 owners report the charging port failing to recognise cables, intermittent charging stops, or the port cover becoming stuck. Software updates have resolved some but not all cases.

Some early ID.4s exhibit inconsistent regenerative braking behaviour, where the level of regen changes unexpectedly or the one-pedal driving mode disengages without input.
