AW55-50LS automatic gearbox flare and valve-body wear

SeriousGearbox & Transmission

The Aisin AW55-50LS that equipped P2 Volvos flares between 2nd and 3rd as the valve body and servo cover wear - Volvo Owners' Club threads describe a 2001 car with exactly that symptom and dealers quoting the gearbox before someone suggested the B4 servo cover. On the S80, DVSA records also carry a recall for a gear shift mechanism that can loosen and jam so that gears cannot be selected. Either way, the fix is remanufacture or valve body work, and a cold-start drive is the only honest test.

Est. Repair Cost: £900-£2,200
Warning Signs:

Rev counter flare and delay between 2nd and 3rd, Harsh or hunting changes at low speed, Limp-home behaviour or inability to select gears in the recalled mechanism cases

What to Inspect:
  • From cold, accelerate gently through all gears and listen for flare and thumps
  • Ask specifically whether the gearbox fluid has ever been changed
  • Confirm on a DVSA recall check for the exact registration that the shift mechanism recall is discharged

Engine mount bracket failure causing vibration and limp-home

ModerateEngine

DVSA’s recall database for early S80s records that incorrect screws used at assembly could break the engine mounting bracket, giving heavy vibration and noise plus reduced power or stalling when the engine management drops into limp-home mode. The Owners' Club forum mirrors the owner experience across the P2 range - a shaking idle that survives new mounts because the bracket and the real cause, often a sticking EGR on the D5, went unnoticed. Inspect the bracket and its fixings on any car that feels rough on idle.

Est. Repair Cost: £200-£700
Warning Signs:

Whole-car vibration at idle felt through the steering and floor, Warning text requiring engine service with no obvious drivability change, Clunk on pull away as the mount collapses

What to Inspect:
  • With the bonnet open, watch the engine as an assistant selects drive and brake
  • Inspect the front mount bracket bolts for corrosion, fracture or fresh replacement
  • Run the registration through the DVSA recall service and print the result

Buying Tips for 1998 Volvo S80 (Gen 1)

  • Straight-six cars (2.9, later 3.2) are the sweet spot for smoothness but check cooling rigorously.
  • Diesels need documented oil-change intervals - long drains worsened the dilution problem.
