All Known Issues

Central locking and immobiliser electrical faults

ModerateElectrics & Electronics

Auto Express names the XC70's central locking system and engine immobiliser as the electrical areas owners most often meet, and the Owners' Club has matching threads from the sibling V70 Mk3 platform: fobs that stop opening the car while the manual key does nothing either - i.e. the central-locking control side failing, not the battery in the fob. Diagnosing between CEM module, receiver and actuators is specialist work; on the DVSA side, 2008 cars also carry a recall for an electrical connector short circuit affecting airbag warning behaviour. Buy with the locks proven, not promised.

Est. Repair Cost: £150-£800
Warning Signs:

Fob buttons ignored while the car is otherwise fine, Manual key turning the lock does nothing to the other doors, Alarm or immobiliser lamp flashing with a no-start

What to Inspect:
  • Operate every locking function from both fobs and the driver lock
  • Check the DVSA recall page for the 2008 connector recall on early cars
  • Ask if the CEM or receiver has ever been replaced and coded

Sunroof drain water into cabin and boot

ModerateBodywork & Rust

The XC70 shares the P3 estate’s drain architecture that FnF’s Volvo guide documents: front sunroof drains through a 90-degree elbow behind the front wheels that clogs or slips off, and rear drains emptying toward the trunk, meaning water ends up in the footwells, the spare-wheel well and under seat electronics. Owners' Club threads across the V70/XC70 section show the mess - rear footwells holding litres after big rain. On a crossover that gets washed and waxed more than a regular estate, blockage likelihood is higher, not lower.

Est. Repair Cost: £80-£900
Warning Signs:

Damp carpets at the sills, Standing water in the boot floor, Corrosion or moisture at the connector under the seat

What to Inspect:
  • Water-test all four drains
  • Look for rust blooms in the spare-wheel well seams
  • Check whether the front drain elbows have been renewed

Rear self-levelling Nivomat damper cost and wear

ModerateSuspension & Chassis

The XC70's load-levelling rear dampers give it the towing manners, and the Owners' Club thread shows the economics: noisy (squeaking that WD-40 quiets for 30 miles), Volvo charging around £470 a damper, and a choice limited to Monroe self-levelling units or a conversion that changes the springs and ride. Worn Nivomats spoil braking stability and bring MOT ride and braking-line advisories. Check the rear ride height when the car is unloaded - a squatting corner is the tell.

Est. Repair Cost: £500-£1,200 per axle
Warning Signs:

Squeaking or knocking from the rear over bumps, Rear corner sitting lower than the other, Uneven rear tyre wear

What to Inspect:
  • Measure or eyeball rear ride height side to side
  • Listen for damper squeal on the test drive over expansion joints and broken tarmac
  • Ask whether the car was a towing vehicle and how often the dampers were renewed

Buying Tips for 2008 Volvo XC70 (Gen 3)

  • Start with the DVSA recall check on the exact plate - 2008-11 cars carry high-pressure fuel pipe and electrical connector recalls among others.
  • Cycle the central locking several times and confirm the engine immobiliser lights behave; Auto Express names this system as the likeliest electrical failure on the XC70.
  • If the car tows, check the rear Nivomat dampers for weeping and sag; replacement is genuine money and cheaper units change the ride height.
  • Water-test the sunroof drains before you accept the carpets - this generation shares the elbow-and-rear-trunk drain layout used on the V70.
  • Prefer 2013-on facelift cars for the refreshed lamps, bumpers and D2/D3 engine options that cut running costs.
