The AdBlue tank heater or pump frequently fails on diesel models, resulting in an engine management light and a countdown until the engine refuses to start.

The electric power-assisted steering rack on the X253 GLC integrates the torque sensor, control module, and electric motor directly onto the steering gear. When internal water ingress or electrical motor failure occurs, power steering assistance cuts out abruptly, rendering low-speed steering exceptionally heavy and logging diagnostic fault codes. Mercedes-Benz does not supply individual motors or sensors separately, necessitating a costly replacement of the entire steering rack assembly followed by factory wheel alignment and steering angle sensor calibration.

On 2.1-litre OM651 and 2.0-litre OM654 diesel variants of the GLC, the single-row timing chain and plastic guide rails wear and stretch over time. Because the hydraulic tensioner relies on engine oil pressure, initial oil starvation upon cold start causes the loose chain to slap violently against degraded guides, producing a distinct 2-to-3-second metallic clatter. If ignored, the chain stretches beyond ECU adaptation limits (throwing camshaft position correlation codes) or jumps teeth on the sprockets, causing piston-to-valve contact and complete engine destruction.
