The P80 V70's rear hatch flexes the wiring loom at the boot hinge until individual conductors snap - the Volvo Owners' Club thread on tailgate wiring faults describes exactly this: intermittent third brake light, dead number-plate lights and an interior cargo lamp that only works when the tailgate is held at a certain angle. The brittle insulation on these looms means solder-and-tape repairs stiffen the wire and often fail again; replacing the full tailgate section is the durable fix. Left unrepaired, a dark brake light is an instant MOT failure.

Every P80 car shares the same Achilles heel, and the estate body makes it worse: the Owners' Club rust guide describes blocked sill drainage causing the sill to rot forwards toward the front wing joint, while club members replacing sills on P80 cars report rear arches, boot floor pockets and rear axle mount areas perforated while the car looks straight overhead.
