1998 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2.9L Diesel · R562 AWJ

The most recent MOT test recorded for this vehicle was on 22 February 2022, which resulted in a pass with no defects or advisories noted. While a clean bill of health at that time is positive, the significant lapse in testing since 2022 suggests the vehicle may have been stationary or otherwise removed from active service for several years. Consequently, the maintenance trend cannot be viewed as stable, but rather as outdated, necessitating a comprehensive current mechanical inspection to establish its present roadworthiness. With a recorded mileage of 257,033 miles over twenty-eight years, the vehicle has averaged approximately 9,180 miles per annum. This is a typical usage profile for a commercial vehicle of this vintage, though the high cumulative mileage indicates substantial wear on primary drivetrain components, engine internals, and suspension mounting points. Prospective buyers should anticipate that consumables and heavy-duty components will be nearing the end of their natural service life, regardless of the lack of recent MOT failures. Given the age of the vehicle and the likelihood of a period of standing, a rigorous physical inspection is essential. Particular attention must be paid to the tyre sidewalls for signs of perishing or ozone cracking, as rubber degrades over time regardless of tread depth. The braking system should be scrutinized for binding calipers and heavy surface corrosion on the brake discs, which can occur when a vehicle remains stationary. Additionally, the 12V battery health and the condition of the electrical system should be verified, as long-term inactivity often leads to deep discharge and permanent cell damage. Mechanical focus should extend to calendar-based fluid degradation, requiring a check of the engine oil, coolant, and brake fluid for contamination or acidity. A thorough inspection of the chassis and load-bearing members is critical to identify structural corrosion, a common vulnerability in older Sprinters. During a test drive, listen for suspension clunks or knocks indicative of worn bushes and coil springs, and monitor the exhaust emissions for excessive smoke, which may signal worn valve seals or piston ring degradation associated with high-mileage diesel engines.
