How to Compare Used Cars in the UK
Evaluating two or more cars side-by-side involves more than comparing upfront purchase prices. Reviewing historical MOT trends, VED tax bands, fuel economy, and insurance group ratings reveals the true cost of ownership over 3 to 5 years.
MOT Advisory Patterns
Check whether MOT advisories recur across multiple consecutive tests without being fixed. Consistent corrosion, suspension play, or subframe advisories can indicate neglect, whereas routine wear-and-tear items (tyres and brake pads) are normal running costs.
VED (Road Tax) Bands
Vehicles registered before 1 April 2017 are taxed based on graduated CO₂ emissions (ranging from £0 to over £600/yr). Vehicles registered after that date pay a standard annual rate, plus a £40,000+ original list price luxury car supplement for years 2 through 6.
Insurance Group Rating
UK insurance groups span 1 to 50 as assessed by Thatcham Research. A jump of just 5 insurance groups can increase your annual comprehensive premium significantly, especially in metropolitan postcodes or for newly qualified drivers.
Real-World MPG & Fuel Costs
Compare official WLTP combined figures with typical real-world consumption. For city driving, hybrid or smaller turbocharged petrol engines often outperform large diesels that risk diesel particulate filter (DPF) clogging on short trips.
Clean Air Zone Compliance
Ensure prospective cars meet London ULEZ, Birmingham CAZ, Bristol CAZ, or Scottish LEZ standards. Typically, Euro 4 petrol cars (mostly registered after 2005) and Euro 6 diesel cars (mostly registered after September 2015) are exempt from daily charges.
Outstanding Finance & Cat Loss
Over 1 in 3 UK vehicles have a hidden past such as unsettled hire purchase (HP/PCP) finance or Category S/N write-off status. Run an authoritative provenance check before signing any contract or transferring funds.
