MINI Roadster (R59)
The Roadster was MINI's answer to why the Coupe had no wind-in-the-hair version: a two-seat open car launched at Detroit in January 2012 and in UK showrooms around six months after the Coupe, from April 2012. It shares the R58's lowered rear and two-seater layout but swaps the steel roof for an electric single-layer soft top that deploys in 18 seconds at up to 20 mph and stows flat behind the seats, leaving a 240-litre boot with a ski hatch. Engines mirror the Coupe - 122hp Cooper, 184hp Cooper S (N18), 218hp JCW and the 143hp Cooper SD - with six-speed manual or Steptronic auto. Every UK Roadster has the electric roof with a manual locking handle, and Auto Express is candid that its thinner hood makes it noisier up than the R57 Convertible. Production ended alongside the Coupe's in 2015; the UK used pool is small, values low, and the same chain, recall and damp checks decide a purchase.

Common Faults & Reliability
These are the most common documented problems for the MINI Roadster (R59), sorted by their typical impact and frequency.
N18 timing chain stretch and cold-start death rattle (Cooper S and JCW)
high severitySame engine as the Coupe and the same story: the 184hp Cooper S and 218hp JCW N18 Prince turbo is chain-driven with Valvetronic, and PistonHeads records the chain wearing on turbocharged cars when oil levels drop or heat degrades it across long service intervals, quoting around £850 to replace at a specialist, while Lohen prices its N18 chain-tensioner death-rattle fix at £820 fitted. The Roadster's enthusiast owners drive the hard way round, so cold-start rattle warrants serious suspicion; a skipped chain on an N18 is terminal to the engine.
Auxiliary water-pump circuit board fire risk - March 2019 recall
high severityPistonHeads lists the recall affecting the Roadster as the same range-wide auxiliary water-pump campaign of March 2019: cars built February and March 2011, across MINI and several BMW models, could have a pump circuit board short that Auto Express notes could potentially lead to a fire; the remedy is a new auxiliary pump, done free in campaign. Early Roadster build periods overlapped those production months, and PistonHeads says affected pumps were sometimes diagnosed as faulty without symptoms - so verify by VIN rather than trusting a clean-looking engine bay.
Soft-top wear, noise and handle-lock faults
medium severityAuto Express's used check-up is direct about the Roadster top: every UK car has an electric roof with a locking handle the driver must release, the hood is a noisier single-layer item versus the Convertible's multi-layer roof, and a wind deflector was optional. PistonHeads adds that the top deploys in 18 seconds at up to 20 mph and is single-layer only. In practice that means perished or fouled seals, wind roar around the frame, sticking or worn handle locks, and pump or motor tiredness on cars that never run the roof through its cycle. Nothing catastrophic, but the roof is the whole value of the car and it is expensive to put right.
