Common Problems & Reliability
The 1986 Saab 9000 has 3 known issues. 2 of these are classified as serious faults that could be expensive to repair.
Body rust and structural corrosion
SeriousBody rust is the classic 9000 killer: steel sills, jacking points, door bottoms, rear wheelarch trailing edges, sunroof and windscreen surrounds and the lower tailgate seams all corrode, accelerated by UK winter salt. Because the sills and jacking points are load-bearing, advanced corrosion is an MOT failure and can be expensive to weld properly. Early CC cars and neglected examples are worst affected, and structural rot can make the car uneconomic to repair.
Symptoms: Bubbling paint at door bottoms, Flaking seams at rear wheelarch trailing edges...
Est. repair cost: £500–£2,000
Turbocharger wear and failure
SeriousTurbochargers - Garrett T25 on early cars, Mitsubishi TD04 on later 2.3 and Aero models - are wear items at high mileage. Oil starvation from blocked pickups or sludge, or a leaking oil feed, wrecks the bearings: the spool becomes noisy, boost drops and blue smoke appears. A failed turbo can dump oil into the intercooler and inlet and risk a runaway, so noisy or smoking turbos need urgent attention before they cause expensive engine damage.
Symptoms: Blue or black smoke under acceleration, Loud whistling or siren noise from the turbo...
Est. repair cost: £750–£1,600
Electrical faults: central locking, SID and climate control
MinorAgeing electrical equipment is a recurring 9000 niggle: the Saab Information Display loses pixels, central locking works intermittently, electric windows slow or fail, and the climate control, blower fan and instrument cluster can all play up. Rarely expensive individually, these faults are irritating and indicate how carefully the previous owner maintained the car.
Symptoms: Missing pixels on the Saab Information Display, Central locking intermittent or inoperative...
Est. repair cost: £80–£250
Buying Tips for the 1986 Saab 9000
- Prioritise a well-documented service history with frequent oil changes; neglected oil changes invite sludge and timing-chain wear on the 2.3-litre engines.
- Inspect sills, jacking points, door bottoms, rear wheelarches and sunroof surround for rust; structural corrosion is expensive to weld and an MOT failure.
- Cold-start the car and listen for timing-chain rattle on 2.3-litre models before oil pressure builds.
- On automatics, check that gearshifts are firm and the ZF 4HP18 fluid has been changed; shuddering on downshifts suggests worn governor seals.
- Test the SID display, central locking, electric windows and climate control; electrical niggles are common, usually cheap to fix, but reveal how the car was cared for.
