Suzuki Ignis (Gen 1)

Production Years: 2000 - 20083 Documented Faults

The first-generation Suzuki Ignis (FH and RG series), sold in the UK between 2000 and 2008, established Suzuki's reputation for innovative, pint-sized crossover vehicles. Blending supermini dimensions with a raised ride height (165mm ground clearance), upright micro-MPV seating, and rugged front styling, the Ignis handled rough rural tracks and urban speed humps with equal ease. The launch model featured a lively all-aluminium 1.3-litre 16-valve petrol engine (83PS) in 3-door and 5-door hatch configurations. In autumn 2003, Suzuki introduced a substantial Series 2 overhaul with a larger, stiffer body, better interior stowage, the 1.5-litre 4GRIP all-wheel-drive variant, and the celebrated Ignis Sport (HT81S). Developed to celebrate Suzuki's Junior World Rally Championship (JWRC) campaign, the Ignis Sport boasted a high-revving 107PS 1.5 VVT engine, close-ratio gearbox, factory Recaro bucket seats, and white 15-inch Enkei alloys, gaining cult status among UK hot hatch fans. Common issues on used examples include smoking ignition switches, anti-roll bar creaks, and inner tie rod wear.

Common Faults & Reliability

These are the most common documented problems for the Suzuki Ignis (Gen 1), sorted by their typical impact and frequency.

Ignition Switch Carbonisation and Smoking Contact

high severity

A notorious issue affecting first-generation Ignis models produced between 2000 and 2004 is carbonisation of electrical grease inside the ignition switch assembly. Due to contact arcing under electrical load, the lubricating grease inside the switch breaks down, becomes conductive, and overheats. This causes smoke and an acrid electrical burning smell to emit from the steering column shroud, leading to melted switch contacts, intermittent ignition loss, and a serious fire hazard if left unaddressed.

Est. repair cost:£110–£260

Anti-Roll Bar Bush Squeaking and Drop-Link Wear

low severity

The front suspension on the Ignis utilizes an anti-roll bar connected via rubber mounting D-bushes and drop links. Over time and continuous exposure to UK road grime, the rubber D-bushes dry out, harden, and accumulate grit against the bar. This produces loud squeaking, groaning, or creaking noises when negotiating corners, navigating roundabouts, or traversing road speed humps. Worn ball joints in the drop links also develop loose play that creates a metallic knocking sound.

Est. repair cost:£90–£220

Inner Tie Rod and Steering Rack Knocking

medium severity

The steering gear on the Ignis is susceptible to premature wear in the inner steering tie rod axial ball joints. Road impacts from potholes and aggressive kerbing transmit shock loads directly through the steering rack ends, creating mechanical play within the joint sockets. This results in an audible clunk or knock through the steering wheel when turning from lock to lock while stationary, alongside wandering steering at higher road speeds and MOT test rejection.

Est. repair cost:£160–£380
