Electric Power Steering Column Torque Sensor Failure
SeriousSteeringThe electric power steering (EPS) column unit on the Type 199 platform suffers from failure of the internal steering angle and torque position sensors. Thermal cycling and vibration fatigue the delicate internal potentiometer tracks and solder connections on the column ECU. The fault initially presents intermittently, often causing the steering to feel heavier in one direction before progressing to sudden total loss of steering assistance. When the system fails, a red steering wheel warning illuminates on the instrument cluster, making the vehicle exceptionally heavy to steer at low speeds.
Sudden and complete loss of power steering assistance while driving, Illuminated red steering wheel warning icon on the instrument cluster, Asymmetrical steering resistance making the wheel significantly heavier to turn in one direction, Intermittent shuddering or clicking sensations through the steering wheel rim when turning
- Start the engine from cold and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while stationary to verify smooth, quiet assistance
- Press the Sport or Sport Boost button to confirm dynamic steering weighting alters cleanly without triggering warnings
- Scan the vehicle OBD system for stored steering fault codes C1001 (internal control unit fault) or C1002 (torque position sensor fault)
- Verify whether the vehicle is fitted with a reconditioned exchange steering column
