Early 2.0 TDI engines (BMM, BKD codes) use a timing belt that can fail if intervals are missed, destroying the engine. Later 1.6 TDI and some 2.0 TDI models switched to chains that stretch and rattle.
Coil packs degrade over time causing misfires, rough running and engine management lights. Affects all petrol models and is a common MOT failure cause.
The dual-mass flywheel on diesel models wears prematurely, causing vibration, judder on clutch engagement and eventually a rattle at idle.
