All Known Issues

N63 V8 Engine Failures

SeriousEngine

The early 4.4L twin-turbo V8 in xDrive50i models suffers from severe thermal fatigue in the hot-V. Hardened valve stem seals cause extreme oil consumption, timing chains stretch, and piezo fuel injectors leak raw fuel.

Est. Repair Cost: £3,000–£8,000
Warning Signs:

Heavy oil burning exceeding 1 litre every 600 miles, Clouds of blue/white smoke on startup and after warm idling, Misfires under load with drivetrain malfunction message

What to Inspect:
  • Check BMW main dealer records for Customer Care Package (CCP) work
  • Inspect turbo cooling lines for crusty leaks
  • Verify if Index 11 or 12 injectors have been installed

Rear Air Suspension

SeriousSuspension & Chassis

The self-levelling rear air suspension rubber bellows crack along their lower flex fold. The air compressor runs constantly to compensate for the pressure drop until it burns out.

Est. Repair Cost: £500–£1,200
Warning Signs:

Rear of car dropped onto tyre stops after parked overnight, Air compressor buzzing loudly for extended periods, "Self-levelling suspension failure" warning on iDrive

What to Inspect:
  • Measure rear arch height after overnight parking
  • Listen for hissing around rear suspension air springs
  • Check compressor operation time on cold start

Active Steering/Dynamic Drive Leaks

SeriousSteering

The high-pressure hydraulic steel pipes supplying the Dynamic Drive active anti-roll bars and active steering rack corrode heavily behind the front right wheel arch in salted UK winters, causing severe CHF fluid leaks.

Est. Repair Cost: £800–£2,000
Warning Signs:

Green Pentosin hydraulic fluid puddling on ground under front right wing, Heavy or inconsistent steering effort, "Dynamic Drive failure" dash alert

What to Inspect:
  • Pull off front right wheel arch liner to inspect steel hydraulic lines for flaking rust
  • Check power steering/Dynamic Drive fluid reservoir level

Water Pump (Petrols)

SeriousCooling System

The electric Continental/Pierburg water pump on 35i models (N54 and N55 6-cylinder engines) suffers plastic impeller cracking or internal electronic circuit board failure without warning, causing sudden overheating.

Est. Repair Cost: £400–£800
Warning Signs:

Yellow then red high engine temperature warning on dash, Radiator cooling fan roaring at maximum speed, Heater blowing cold air during engine overheating

What to Inspect:
  • Check service history for replacement electric water pump and thermostat within the last 60,000 miles
  • Scan for stored 2E81/2E82 electric coolant pump communication speed deviation codes

Buying Tips for 2008–2013 BMW X6 (E71)

  • Check the electronic parking brake (EPB) actuator; listen for a loud screaming noise when applying the handbrake, meaning it's failing.
  • Inspect the rear boot floor for dampness; water ingress from poor seals will destroy the expensive modules housed there.
  • On the 30d/40d diesels, listen carefully for timing chain rattle on cold startup; a stretched chain is an engine-out repair.
  • Test the xDrive transfer case for juddering at low speeds, which is often caused by owners fitting mismatched or incorrect tyres.
  • Check the condition of the massive rear tyres; the X6 has a very aggressive staggered setup, and rear tyres are shockingly expensive.
  • Verify the rear headroom and boot space; the sloping roof severely compromises practicality compared to the X5.
