Common Problems with the

The 2013 period has 3 more issues than the Chevrolet Captiva average across all year periods.

All Known Issues

Diesel Oil Dilution

SeriousEngine

The 2.0 and 2.2 VCDi engines are highly susceptible to oil dilution from DPF regenerations. This thins the oil and can destroy the turbo or the engine.

Most affected: 2.0 VCDi, 2.2 VCDi

Estimated cost: £3,000+ (Engine replacement)Affects: 20072015

Typical symptoms

  • Oil level rising
  • Thinned, watery-feeling oil
  • Turbo failure

What to inspect before you buy

  • Smell the oil dipstick for a diesel scent
  • Check service history for "mid-interval" oil changes

Clutch and Dual-Mass Flywheel Failure

SeriousGearbox & Transmission

The clutch and dual-mass flywheel on manual models can fail prematurely, especially on diesel variants used for towing or in heavy traffic.

Most affected: 2.0 VCDi, 2.2 VCDi Manual

Estimated cost: £700–£1,300Affects: 20072015Often appears around: 40,000–80,000 miles

Typical symptoms

  • Difficulty selecting gears
  • Burning smell
  • Vibration when accelerating
  • Slipping clutch

What to inspect before you buy

  • Test the clutch bite point
  • Listen for DMF rattle at idle
  • Check for clutch slip under load

Timing Chain Stretch

SeriousEngine

The timing chain tensioner can wear, causing the chain to stretch and rattle. If the chain jumps teeth, it can cause catastrophic engine damage.

Most affected: 2.0 VCDi, 2.2 VCDi

Estimated cost: £800–£1,500Affects: 20072015Often appears around: 60,000–100,000 miles

Typical symptoms

  • Rattling noise on cold start
  • Engine management light
  • Poor starting
  • Chain noise that settles when warm

What to inspect before you buy

  • Listen for rattling on cold start
  • Check for timing chain-related fault codes
  • Ask about oil change history

Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) Failure

ModerateBrakes

The EPB module or the cables often fail or seize, leading to a stuck handbrake or an MOT failure.

Most affected: All models

Estimated cost: £300–£700Affects: 20072015

Typical symptoms

  • "Park" warning light on dash
  • Handbrake won't engage or release
  • Screeching noise when applying

What to inspect before you buy

  • Test the handbrake on a slope multiple times

Buying Tips for the 2013 Chevrolet Captiva

  • The 2013 facelift is cosmetic only; mechanically very similar to the 2011 update
