Common Chrysler Problems
Chrysler's presence in the UK is characterized by bold, American-styled vehicles that often utilize European mechanical underpinnings (mostly from Mercedes-Benz). While offering a lot of metal for the money, they can be expensive to maintain due to specialist parts and specific reliability quirks.
Common Chrysler trouble spots
- •Suspension component wear (bushes, ball joints) is extremely common across the range due to the weight of the vehicles.
- •The 3.0 CRD diesel engine (300C/Grand Voyager) is prone to "swirl motor" failure caused by oil leaks.
- •Crossfire models suffer from "sticky" ignition barrels and faulty Relay Control Modules (RCM).
- •PT Cruisers are notorious for labor-intensive cambelt changes and overheating issues.
What to check on used Chryslers
- ✓Check for a full service history; many Chryslers have been neglected as they transitioned into the budget used car market.
- ✓On models like the 300C and Crossfire, remember that many mechanical parts are shared with Mercedes-Benz, often making them easier to source than body trim.
- ✓Test every electrical switch and feature, as Chrysler electronics from the 2000s can be temperamental.
- ✓Be wary of high-mileage automatics that haven't had regular transmission fluid changes.

Chrysler Grand Voyager
The final Grand Voyager was one of the most spacious MPVs sold in the UK and is still searched because little else offers the same family-hauling ability. The downside is that age, weight and complexity hit hard: diesels, automatics and sliding-door electrics all need proper scrutiny.
Chrysler 300C
The 300C is a distinctive executive saloon that shares its suspension and transmission designs with older Mercedes E-Class models. It is a robust long-distance cruiser but heavy on its feet.
Chrysler Crossfire
Essentially a Mercedes SLK in a sharp American suit, the Crossfire is a reliable and characterful coupe/roadster, though it lacks the handling finesse of European rivals.
Chrysler PT Cruiser
The PT Cruiser remains a recognisable UK oddball with a loyal following, but it needs to be bought as an ageing niche car rather than a bargain family hatch. Cooling-system honesty and electrical behaviour matter more than the retro styling.
