Common Problems with the
2002 Ferrari 550 Maranello / 575M Maranello

The 575M Maranello arrived in 2002 with a 5.75-litre V12 producing 515bhp, an optional F1 automated manual and revised handling. It is the last of the traditional manual front-engined V12 Ferraris in its manual form and a strong used buy if service records are complete.

What changed for 2002

  • •575M Maranello: 5.75-litre V12 producing 515bhp, optional F1 gearbox
  • •Handling GTC package and minor styling revisions
  • •Production ended in 2006; succeeded by the 599 GTB

Common MOT watch-outs

Gearbox synchromesh and selection wear

SeriousGearbox & Transmission

Early 550 Maranellos can suffer difficult gear selection, particularly into first, third and fifth, and wear of the second and third gear synchromesh, causing crunching or reluctance to engage even from cold. A full rebuild is expensive and some internal parts are no longer readily available, which can make the work very costly. Test every gear when cold and warm during the test drive; any crunch or missed shift should be investigated by a specialist before purchase.

Est. Repair Cost: £5,000–£9,000
Warning Signs:

Crunching or reluctance when selecting first, third or fifth gear, Gears that crunch or fail to engage cleanly when cold, Worn second or third gear synchromesh felt through the lever

What to Inspect:
  • Test every gear when the gearbox is cold and fully warm
  • Listen for crunching or grinding during gearchanges
  • Ask whether the gearbox has been rebuilt or synchros replaced

Oil leaks from cam cover gaskets and camshaft seals

ModerateEngine

The 550's F133 V12 is generally robust, but oil leaks from the cam cover gaskets, front camshaft seals and rear of the engine are routine as the cars age. Leaks are best addressed at the cam-belt service when access is easiest. Oil dripping onto the exhaust can smell and, in extremes, create a fire risk, while low oil levels risk engine damage. Check for oil residue around the cam covers, under the engine and on the garage floor.

Est. Repair Cost: £700–£1,600
Warning Signs:

Oil residue around the cam covers and front of the engine, Oil drips on the garage floor or undercarriage, Burning-oil smell after hot runs

What to Inspect:
  • Inspect cam covers and front seals for oil weeping with a torch
  • Check the underside of the engine and garage floor for drips
  • Verify oil level is stable between services

Coolant hose leaks into the engine Vee

ModerateCooling System

Coolant leaks into the engine Vee from ageing hoses are a known 550 fault, and owners report the hose under the intake manifold splitting and repeating even after replacement. Low coolant can cause overheating and, left unchecked, head-gasket or head damage. Look for coolant residue around the top of the engine, a falling coolant level between services, and a sweet smell after hot runs. Pressure-test the cooling system at a pre-purchase inspection.

Est. Repair Cost: £600–£1,400
Warning Signs:

Coolant residue around the top of the engine and intake area, Coolant level falling between services, Sweet coolant smell after hot runs or rising temperature gauge

What to Inspect:
  • Inspect hoses around the top of the engine and intake manifold for splits
  • Check the coolant level and condition over several visits
  • Pressure-test the cooling system at a specialist pre-purchase inspection
