Cam belt overdue and catastrophic engine damage

SeriousEngine

The F355's 3.5-litre V8 is an interference engine, and Ferrari requires the cam belts, tensioners and ancillary services to be renewed every three years or 30,000 miles, regardless of how few miles the car has covered. Because the engine and transaxle must be removed to access the belts, the job is labour-intensive and easily deferred. A snapped belt causes piston-to-valve contact and catastrophic engine failure, so cars without a documented belt change within the interval are a major risk.

Est. Repair Cost: £3,000–£5,000
Warning Signs:

No usable warning before a belt snaps — the engine simply stops, Service records show the last belt change is over three years old or over 30,000 miles ago, Engine will not start or turns over with no compression after a belt failure

What to Inspect:
  • Demand specialist invoices proving a cam-belt change within the last three years or 30,000 miles
  • Ask whether the engine and transaxle were removed for the belt service, as required by factory procedure
  • Have a Ferrari specialist inspect belt condition and tensioner bearings before purchase

Cracked exhaust manifolds

SeriousExhaust & Emissions

The factory F355 exhaust manifolds are thin-walled and prone to cracking with heat cycling, typically becoming apparent from around 25,000 to 40,000 miles. Cracks leak exhaust gases and, if ignored, can draw white residue into the engine bay and damage nearby components; once one side fails, the other usually follows shortly after. A ticking or exhaust-leak noise on cold start that fades as the engine warms is the classic warning. Replacement with original-pattern parts is expensive, so many cars have already been fitted with aftermarket headers.

Est. Repair Cost: £3,500–£6,000
Warning Signs:

Ticking or exhaust-leak noise from the engine bay on cold start, Noise that fades as the engine and manifolds warm up, White residue or heat discolouration around manifold joints

What to Inspect:
  • Listen for a ticking or blowing noise from the manifolds on a cold start
  • Visually inspect the manifolds and heat shields for cracks with a torch
  • Ask whether aftermarket headers from specialists such as Capristo or Tubi are fitted

Valve guide wear and oil burning

ModerateEngine

The F355's 40-valve V8 uses valve guides that can wear, allowing oil into the combustion chambers and causing poor compression and oil burning. Ferrari estimated around a fifth of 1995 model-year cars could be affected, and a suspect batch also appeared in 1997–1998 cars, so the fault is not confined to very early examples. Blue smoke on overrun, oily spark plugs and a compression test reveal the problem, and renewing the guides requires cylinder-head work.

Est. Repair Cost: £4,000–£8,000
Warning Signs:

Blue smoke from the exhaust on overrun or after idling, Higher-than-expected oil consumption between services, Oily or fouled spark plugs when inspected

What to Inspect:
  • Arrange a compression test to identify weak cylinders
  • Inspect spark plugs for oil fouling
  • Ask for documentation confirming valve guides have been replaced, especially on pre-1998 cars

Rear buttress and rear wing corrosion

ModerateBodywork & Rust

On Berlinetta and GTS (targa) models, the seam where the rear buttresses meet the rear wings flexes over time and cracks, admitting moisture between the aluminium and steel panels. Corrosion can be extensive under the paint and is often only revealed during a respray. Most cars show some degree of cracking in this area. Inspect the buttress-to-wing joints, rear wings and sills with a torch, and ask whether any repairs have been carried out.

Est. Repair Cost: £2,500–£6,000
Warning Signs:

Cracking at the seam where rear buttresses meet the rear wings, Bubbling or blistered paint around the rear wings and buttresses, Visible corrosion once paint is stripped or repaired areas revealed

What to Inspect:
  • Inspect buttress-to-wing seams and rear wings with a torch for cracking
  • Check rear wing and sill areas for filler or previous body repairs
  • Ask whether the car has had any rear-wing or buttress corrosion repairs

Buying Tips for 1997 Ferrari F355 Berlinetta / GTS / Spider

  • Demand documented cam-belt changes within the last three years or 30,000 miles, with invoices showing the engine and transaxle were removed
  • Listen for exhaust-manifold ticking on a cold start and ask whether aftermarket headers are already fitted
  • On pre-1998 cars, confirm valve-guide replacement or budget for cylinder-head work; look for blue smoke on overrun
  • Inspect the rear buttress-to-wing seams and rear wings for cracking and corrosion, especially on Berlinetta and GTS models
  • On F1 cars, obtain a clutch-wear readout and check the F1 pump primes for only a few seconds when the driver door is opened
